Default Sub MOA good enough?

I loaded some .308 168 gr Speer BTHP and 168 gr Hornady BTHP with 44.5 grains of IMR 4064. I didn't shoot as well about 1 1/2" groups, but my father-in-law had a 3 shot group with the Speer bullets that made a 1/2 triangle.. He also had a four shot group with the Hornady bullets that put two through the same hole one right next to those two and one about a half inch below those. Is that good enough?? I want more! I want them all to go throught ht esame hole! This stuff is addicting!

Keep in mind I am pretty new at reloading. I could load bullets all day. It is relaxing.

Yeah, it is good enough. You might try different powders (Re 15, 3031, Varget, 748, H380), and a bullet comparetor to check how far you can load to the lands. Check out the thread called "Ruger Accuracy" in the Firearms review forum. Also go to Accurate reloading, in the "Medium Bore" forum,...check out the thread "Confessions of a .308 shooter" it gives you faith in this terriffic little cart.

You did not say what kind of rifle you had. I have a friend that got an old "Western Field" Mossgerg .308 sporter. It is a beauty.

I M moving to the Hurst area. DO you know any good shooting ranges, hopefully with 200 and 300 yd ranges??

Depends on the rifle and load for me. Like the other day, with my 308win shot 150gr barnes triple XXX. Got 1.8" groups. Not good enough for that rifle. I like consistent better than 1.5". So I am going to play with it. But that gun shoots 165 gr sierra like no bodies businiess. But for that ultra light barrel, 1.5" is good enough. For my 10lb RUM, and 200gr matchkings, I expect .5" or less every time. For 180gr nosler partitions, I expect 1.1 or 1.2" groups.

Depends on use, want, gun, and load.

We were shooting a Savage target rifle. I also have a Mohawk which I have shot those loads through it yet. I have put three through the same hole with that gun though. Those were 165 grain siera gameking bullets. Those are good bullets. I would have to check my log book for the rest of the specs.

MarkIIVT,

Are you talking about the Hurst in Ft Worth? If so the only one I know of is in Everman. It only has a 100 yard range though. There may be one somewhere North of there near Grapevine but I am not sure.

I can live with 1 1/2 groups in a rifle meant for hunting out to two yards or so. I like to see one inch groupd in all my rifles or better of course is also fine. Some rifles will do it with about any load and some won't cut it with any load. My 257 Roberts will shoot Nosler Balisitic tips or Partitions into groups under 1/2 inch. I have a new 308 in a Browning A-bolt that I have not shot yet. If my rifle will hit a poker chip at 100 yards then its ready to hunt with. Thats my before season test for my guns.

Good enough is a very subjective term, highly dependant on the opinion of the shooter and the application.

Is sub-MOA good enough for big game hunting out to 400+ yards? Yep.

Is sub-MOA good enough to win a benchrest competition? Depends on how sub-MOA it is.

Is sub-MOA good enough for you? That's your call.

My goal is to get my rifle to shoot one hole...not one ragged hole, but one smooth concentric hole as if only one bullet had struck the target. Perfect precision. Everything else is not "good enough". I'll probably never accomplish this goal, but I'm sure as heck going to try. I'm going to glass bed my rifle this weekend, and I just got back from Scheel's with a Stoney Pt OAL gauge and bullet comparator so I can precisely measure and adjust the seating depth for max accuracy. The next step will be to have the trigger worked on. It's got too much creep and could stand to be about 1 to 1.5lbs lighter. I will say that the pursuit of perfect precision has really sparked my interest in shooting and handloading. I just can't wait until we start getting regularly nice days so I can get to the range when I have time. Thank God spring is coming!

To be honest I personaly am not that good of a shot. I have a Mcmillian bench rifle chamber 222 my best group has been around .3" my Dad can shoot the same rifle under .2" that's a five shot group at 100yds. I'm happy with my 1/3inch group but I only do it for fun and don't shoot competition. My hunting rifles will shoot 3/4 MOA or I will not stop messing with them till they do. I even have a rem model 4 that will shoot under 1 MOA. Some times I will work on a rifle off and on for a couple of years. That's the whole fun of it. Making them shoot better. Once they are shooting as good as they can I loose interest in them and by another one to mess with.........that's why it's called a hobbie.

1 1/2 is good enough for a hunting rifle. I am on the same lines as James B, my standard is 1" groups for any of my hunting rifles. And it can drive you nuts when you have a rifle that just doesn't like anything, but that is part the challenge.
