Default IMR 4064 & 4350 Comparison

I'm loading the '06 with 4064, generally with bullet weights between 165 and 180 grs. I've been getting load ideas from various handloading sites, along with different manuals. I see a lot of loads with 4350, which I think is a little slower. 4064 drops down (in terms of velocity) in the load tables with heavier bullets. I'd be curious to get your views on these two powders and their best application.

Thanks.

both will work well for your bullet weights in the .30-06...however, I'd prefer the IMR 4350 of the two.

I like the 4064 for 308's period. But a friend of mine has a 270Win that I load for and the gun only likes 4064. Strange. But I love 4350 for 270 or 3006. I get 150fps more velocity with 4350 and 130gr Sierra gamekings than I do with 4064 out of a 270win.

I've loaded both for an "06". I found some accurate loads with the 4064, but it seemed I could match the accuracy with notably increased velocity with the 4350. It also seemed that the 4350 shot its most accurate loads at near or maximum--something many reloaders like to find for a hunting load. Good luck.

I tried to list all the powders from my Hodgden manual. IMR 4064 was listed at 79. IMR 4350 was listed at 94 with H 4350 at 95. It may be because the 4350 gives the bullet more of a push rather than a slap. From the list, there are 15 powders between them.

My '06 seams to favor 4350. Ive tried to find loads for it using 4064 but they never grouped well. I had a 25-06 that favor 4350 for 100gr bullets but 4064 for 75gr and neither worked for 115 ballistic tips! My brother had a 308 that favored 4064.

I like and use them both. I have a very accurate load for my 30.06 with 4064 and Hornady's 130grn spire point. I can mustard more velocity with the 4350 but it's not as accurate in my rifle as the 4064 with the 130grn bullet. If i move up to 150grn bullets then the 4350 groups much better than the 4064 does. I mainly use 4350 in my 25.06 which is very accurate with a 120grn spitzer.

I used the 4064 with 150 gr. in my 30-06 and it was a show stopper.

I have tried several different loads and powders since 1972 in several different 06's and it's always comes back to IMR4064. This is with 150 gr. Sierra Gamekings.

IMR 4350. I have never shot any other powder from my 06, never needed to.

I was in the preliminary stages of load development when I ran across Dan Newberry's website.

http://home.earthlink.net/~dannewber...addevelopment/

You may have seen this before, but if not, he uses an interesting technique for developing his loads. He refers to it as Optimal Charge Weight Load Development. Some agree with him and some don't. I thought it was a good read. He has a great load for IMR 4350 and 165gr bullets. I followed his technique, with my 06, and found his recommended load to best from my gun also. I've not tried any other calibers he has listed.

Hope this helps,
Toby
