"I have heard alot of handloaders say they were concerned about tort liability, but I have yet to hear a judge's decision on a case. How much did they get?"
Exactly, Sheriff Jim Wilson, Hand gun Editor, with help from a retired federal judge thoroughly researched this. They could not find one case where the use of a handload made one bit of difference in a righteous shooting. This is a mythperpetuated by Massad Ayoob.

You can buy the 148 grain double end wad cutters pretty darn cheap. The ones I have checked are loaded to about 750 FPS I carry them often in my 38 Snub. The police or FBI load is the 158 grain Lead HP at +P velocities. This is a safe load to use legal wise.
Defense lawyers like to bring up the fact that factory loads are not heavy enough for the Rambo crowd that has to hop up their loads. Use Factory loads and if possible, use what the local police use. Better safe than sorry.
