The first onetook over two hours. But by time I had done a dozen or so, it wound up being about a 45 minute job; half of which is set up time.

These generally come out best when you are also opening up the bolt face. If not, then the groove where the factory Remington extractor went needs to be filled in with JB Weld to keep the case rim from wandering into this recess.
So if I sent you a bolt from a 300RUM, to have a sako extractor put on, you would need to put some JB weld there?

Yes. It will work better with the factory recess filled in.

How does JB Weld hold up to the vibration and concussion of a Magnum? I know that JB Weld is good stuff, but I have also had problems with it not standing up to vibration real well. Now I have never used it in a gun, mostly just on mechanical parts. Dont get me wrong either, this is just an honest question and I am not questioning your expertise or methods. I know that with the proper preperation JB Weld can be an excellent filler.

There is a trick or two to getting the JB Weld to stayput. But when the surface is properly prepared, the stuff will stay. There are guns that I did this to back in the 70's that are still working fine. I have also used it a couple of times on scope bases with success. Without filling in the old extractor slot, the case head sometimes shifts a little and doesn't "ping" out of the ejection port like it should.

Most of the Sako extractor conversions I have done over the years involved opening up a 30/06 bolt face to the belted magnum. In this instance, the opening of the bolt face gets rid of the old extractor groove.

Another option to consider is to just purchase an aftermarket Remington 700 bolt. There is a company called ECT that makes a one piece bolt. It already trued up and cut for a sako extractor. $150 for the stripped bolt. In addition to standard calibers; these are made in the 6MM PPC bolt face size, and are actually a pretty good bargain compared to the labor to open up a .223 , true up the bolt, and install a sako extractor. I built a benchrest gun with one of these last year that shoots 1/8" groups.

I really appreciate all the replies..the knowledge here is overwhelming! After my post I had the opportunity to check with two seperate highly respected "smiths" who both advised me the bolt face coversion/sako extractor would not be difficult.....however....they both said getting the 300 WSM to feed properly is often a chore! My intention was to have the conversion done...have Krieger barrel the action...have Mcmillan "stock it" and add a jewell trigger. If feeding is going to be such an issue, I'll just scrap the WSM idea and buy factory. I need a custom 6br for chucks anyway!

I never thought touse JB Weld for the recess. Makes sense, but I wouldn't want it in my rifle. One day it's gonna give and end up in the chamber, probably while trying to chamber a round. OUCH! Imagine the gouge in the chamber after that.

I've only done one Sako extractor that didn't accompany opening up the bolt face. I used the old extractor to fill the void. Trimmed it toclear the Sako extractor, then drilled two holes and used old style 700 extractor stake in pins. It fills the recess and will never come loose. It's on an XP100 that I've had for 22 years and has been re-barrelled twice sinceI installed theSako extractor.
