Model 700 Action??
 

I have a Rem 700 SA, originally a .243, I am interested in making a custom 300WSM. I realize the bolt face is different for the two calibers. My question is whether this action can be used? If so what has to be done to modify the bolt face? Also if this will work can a Sako type extractor be utilized. Thanks for any Help!

I don't think so, but not sure. I think the whole bolt is different. If you want to sell it let me know. I want to build a custom .243.

The bolt can be opened to magnum face... I don't know what it cost these days though. Make sure who ever does it knows what they are doing though.

My test proved to me that a factory 700 extractor held on a case rim as good or better than a sako conversion every time! It doesn't "look" as good though, so most don't believe it!

Yes, the bolt face can be opened up to .532" and fitted with a Sako style extractor.

The cost for opening the bolt face and converting to a Sako extractor should be $75. It is a relatively easy conversion for an experienced gunsmith. There is also a magazine box and follower issue, along with the rails. Overall, you are probably better off just selling the .243 to Jeepkid and buying a .300 WSM/RSAUM.

Concur.
To much fitting and expense. $75 would be pretty cheap. Cost on the extractor, spring and plunger is $26 plus shipping. And a three step milling procedure. The last one I did was about 3 years ago, took over two hours and chipped an end mill on that hardened bolt. I charged $135.

Dadgone roskoe, I pay $120 to have an extractor put on. I need to just send you my bolt to convert mine.

The amount of money and finding a good gunsmith that can do the work would be time consuming. Opening up the bolt-face is easily done but properly working the feed rails and making the rifle chamber correctly are the hard parts that require alot of time. The Sako conversion is no big deal either.

You could sale your action and buy a Howa action that has an M-16 style extractor & plunger ejector.

The first onetook over two hours. But by time I had done a dozen or so, it wound up being about a 45 minute job; half of which is set up time.

These generally come out best when you are also opening up the bolt face. If not, then the groove where the factory Remington extractor went needs to be filled in with JB Weld to keep the case rim from wandering into this recess.
