Results of 50 Hdy SPSX in .223
#1
Well, this fall I loaded some Hdy SPSX 50 grainers in my .223 ahead of a mid 20's load of IMR4895 and CCI 400's. I shot a couple jack rabbits earlier in the summer, and had good success. Also shot some jacks this weekend with the load. Needless to say I am quite impressed with the amount of damage that is done with this load. One jack, 50 yards or so, broad side, I hit around the base of the neck, it more or less fragmented sideways, nearly severing the head completely off. Another jack this weekend, facing away, probably also 50 yards, hit mid back, gutted from lower abdomen to upper chest. Blood, guts and gore for a good 10 feet beyond. One other (which I have a picture of somewhere I think), was about 100 yards broadside, hit mid shoulder and blew both legs completely off. I have yet to see what these will do to coyotes, and squirrels are in their holes for the winter.

yep sounds like they are working like they supposed too

thats about the same kind of results I was getting on jacks from 55 grain SPSX's loaded to mid to high 20's never chronoed the loads but according to the book they outta be pushin 2700 to 2800 fps plenty fast IMO for these bullets.

I don't recall any warning label, but I should be fine in the velocity department. I haven't chronographed the loads yet, but with 24.5 grs of IMR4895, I should be right in the 3050-3100 range, which is plenty fast.
I will have to chrony this load sometime soon.
I loaded 4 shots each of 24.5, 25, 25.5, 26, and 26.5, and the most accurate at 100 yards was the 24.5 with .456, so I stuck with it, and loaded the remaining 80 of the 100 for that charge, and have two more boxes to burn.
Subsequent groups later on gave me a group right at 1" at 100 yards, which is plenty accurate for jacks and dogs out to 250 yards or so, though my shots are rarely that long, and usually under 150.
Well, I tried to post a pic, but my scanner is giving me fits, so much for that idea.

I had pretty much the same experience. In a very smooth barrel, sometimes you can get up to 3550 or so before they vaporize in flight. Similar deal for the old Sierra Blitz bullets.
