I guess a Conservative majority win was too much to hope for this time around. Not getting a minority even is kind of a tough pill to swallow but on the other hand a Conservative minority would probably have meant collaborating with the NDP (gag!) or worse, the Bloc (double gag! gag!). Now f%~$face is in that unenviable position instead. So if there is any bright side to all of this I guess it is that the Fiberals & NDP together have less than the 155 seats to form a coalition, therefore the Conservatives will have a strong say and an important role to play. Hopefully they'll do a good job and prove their capabilities for the next go-around which will not be that far away. I give it 18 months at most.

On a personal note, I was hoping beyond hope that our local Fiberal Incumbent, Do-Nothing-Longfield and our Darling-of-the-gun-registry-McLellan would not be re-elected and sadly they both were, boohoo gg.

FUD campaign the Libs ran was a complete success. I heard many say at least we know the history of the liberals but Harper I don't trust! Well that doesn't even hold water the fact people are comfortable with the Fiberals and become accustom to their horrific management abilities makes me both sick and irrate! Some solace in the minority but they still might be able to push forward with the NDP's 19 votes and the 1-independant in BC who the Conservatives booted (don't tell me this gentleman isn't a bit pissed at Harpers camp!) would give them the 155 votes they need. That weasle Martin scared canadians into thinking Harper and Kline had something in the works with regards to healthcare, funny Mr. Martin plan to reduce waiting listed failed to even mention the reason was b/c of his governments continued cuts...people who voted for the liberals just on the healthcare issue are nothing more than idiots. Our medicare system is in need of revamp, we can't keep up with the demand and unless a huge amount of cash is spent for healthcare professionals, larger facilities, additonal and updated equipment in will only get worse with our aging population. I thought most people understood this but apparently not! What gripes me evanmore about Martin and a true measure of a man he is, when attending a Rally for Ralph Gooddale in Regina he spoke of changes and decriminalizing the gun laws than less than a day later he recanted that and publicly said I never said that....B***sh*t! The BS about not wanting our military to be upgraded just shows how stupid canadians really are and little the other parties feel about self defense. A nation that has such raw resources, rich lands and huge geographical landscape with less than enough resources, man power or military presence to protect even 1 province we are clearly ripe for the picking. We rely on the US which is also in their best interest but if we continuely do not support or they feel a week link how long do you think the NA Defense mechanism footed mostly by the US will be intact. Then there are all the social issues, we need to protect and help those who can't make it in the tough world...sheet man we have families barely making a go that work fulltime and pay for some loser to sit on his duff and drink beer in his AC housing project watching a Sat. on his Plasma TV..that is the canada I want to keep. I won't even go to the same sex or indians affairs things.

It just plain sucks to keep these thieves in power, once again a few lambs will be slaughter for good of the party and the rest will be swept under the mountain under the rug!

Amen Skeeter!!! I have changed my mind about the Government being a bunch of airheads with no brains. It's obvious Canadian citizens are the morons! It was the smallest turnout to vote in our history[:@]How much crap can we endure until someone figures it out. To all who voted Conservative, I don't include you, but for the rest of the Canadians...You are all idiots! The day you need to go to the hospital for something, you'll pay for your stupidity...mark my words![:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@]

Skeeter; you forgot one other important piece of the puzzle. Martin needs to appoint a speaker of house. If this is a liberal, NDP or Independant they lose one more vote. Unfortunately Martin has to be honest while he's in minority. There will be loads of social program spending and he'll set himself up for the next election.

In no way to slight western politicians (I've voted for them the last 3 elections) but Jean Charest may end up being the Conservative ace in the hole.

One piece of bad news that I saw today was that maybe Harper will step down as leader of the PC's. Part of the problem was the eastern part of Canada doesn't know anything about him.
Clearly, from Manitoba westward he was respected enough to take all 4 provinces. This fact alone should wake up even the stupidest of us in Ontario and the maritimes that Harper is someone to be seriously considered as leader of this entire country. I'm just sick of seeing politicians coming from Quebec and the western provinces need to be heard and given the chance to show that Canada is made up of more than two provinces, Quebec and the all the rest!

Sawbill; you're right. Unfortunately the liberals and NDP have branded Harper as an extremist. They did this to one of the most honest politicians in Canada (Preston Manning) and they will continue to do it with gullable Ontario voters taking the bait. On top of that the voters in Quebec won't vote for anyone unless they're Liberal or from Quebec. It's a screwed up system but the liberals have done too well alternating between French leaders (that won majorities) and English leaders that only lasted a short period of time. It would be great if Harper could prove himself in the next sessions of parliment but the Liberals will be collecting every piece of garbage that they can shovel for the next election. If Harper were to win without a single member of parliment from Quebec we'd be in a seperatist campaign like you've never seen before.

The way I see it the reasons that Ontario wouldn't vote for Harper were:
-they were afraid to vote for a person with strong morals and convictions
-they were afraid to vote for someone new
- they were afraid of other conservative members
- they were afraid of a Bloc supported minority
-they were afraid..................................

Ontario may have become to socialist to ever fully back a conservative party. Somewhere about 65% of voters voted for the Liberals or NDP. That doesn't leave much room for other parties to win seats. Ontario would rather vote for crap knowing it's the same crap they've always had and the same crap that they can expect.

If you live in ontario, conservatives don't look good on ethics, management, or honesty, and I voted for them twice. They are all crooks, Mulroney gave us the safe storage law which means you can't keep a loaded gun. They all suck. When you come to the conclusion that they all suck, then people vote their interests, and most average earners don't have much in comon with the party that is in the pocket of stronach, mulroney and the aspers. Alberta is a special conservative case because of all the rancehrs americans, and oil money. They think they live in the real world and are all self sufficient, just like the arabs. Until you guys out west hijacked the conservative movement and turnned it into the western equivalent of the bloc we had pretty regular changes of governement. You guys moved more towards the liberals, 7%, than we did, and are still giving landslide annie a job for life, you have a lot of work to do localy from what I can see.

Canadian voters all get in a knot because they want impossible loads of freebies, and then they complain when they don't receive them. The politicians make promises they can't keep. The solution is with the voters. Vote your interests, and don't let them just hold out candy for you to lust after. Ontario votes liberal because at the end of the day they know martin won't go running back out west with his tail between his legs mutering about western alianation. I voted for preston because he had good ideas, but harper isn't in the same class.

Martin won't have time to go running out west worrying about alienation because he'll have his nose up the Bloc leaders butt trying to appease the Quebecers--something that everyone should realize is an impossible task.

You are so right Sawbill.

The comentators have given a bunch of reasons for the extraordinary spectacle of quebecers turning againsts liberals for the sponsorship scandal. Such nicities as embarassment at being shown in their venality, or concern over having their votes bought, as well as the same things we all feel relative to waste and dishonesty and such. My less high minded read is that they realized that unless they changed horses quickly, they would not be seeing more liberal largess with the liberals convinced that they have to be more careful. Now everyone is saying that Martin will have to make like a proctologist, and we are back to business as usual.

"They think they live in the real world and are all self sufficient, just like the arabs."

that is just until the oil runs out. if albertans thought they were self suficient indefintly like the arabs then they would't object to sending 10 billion a year to support socialism when some of that should be used to diversify for when the oil runs out. and don't get me started on liberal policies in general that are against the interest of westerns.
