What a differance a couple of days make. Last time I looked, the Accu -Weather long range forcastsaid it would be in the 40s for my Bow Zone hunt the week ofNov 12th. Now it says in the 20s F, with snow! Talk about timing. This gets me even more PUMPED!!
Has anyone noticed any "seeking" going on, or is it still too early?

early in, I was out this past saturday and saw the little guys were still sparring while in their buddy groups, meanwhile the bigger bucks had broken off looking for a little more solitude in my ML area. Though no bucks following does interms of whitetails. Mulie's on the otherhand appear to be jockeying for the pending rut. Saw lots of bucks with does, though the big ones were oddly absent from view...to me this means the muliesare starting to get stinky. I deceided to hold off on filling my remaining mulie doe tag until after primary rut has passed and then switched to whittetails for the day. I find mulies really strong just prior and during primary rut and seeing meat is the main concern I'll wait till Dec to fill that tag if I need more in the freezer by then.

I hope the forecast holds true for your hunt, sounds like perfect conditions. I'll be praying for the same the week of the 19th here!

Saskabush, sometimes having Mr. Donald doesn't hurt, word has it Garry was a main reason for the change of heart in 29 by SERM.... Only wish it could have extended past this zone.Acalling of all hunters in Sask. to ban the herd reduction and sampling efforts for this year in hopes a message will be sent to SERM. The current plan is flawed and everyone knows it.[:'(] Best of luck if you make it back to the pumpkin patch.

Early
I just checked the local weather network for your week here and it's supposed to be +1 and rain for the 15th, so it's not looking great, I shot a 180 + buck on Friday night and looked for 3 days for him with 3 guys. No luck neither.. I feel like an idiot I was sure, I was sure I made a great shot at 18 yards,The arrow went into the feathers, but not through. Their was great blood for 70 yards then nothing. It's like he stopped bleeding. I took a few days off due to mental hurt. I'm over it and was back on stand last night. The bucks have their noses to the does butts right now ,so I'm thinking it might be an early rut. It will definately be full swing by mid week next week. Email me with your arrival times and flight number and if I can, I'll meet you at the airport,it's only 15 minutes away from my place.

I feel for ya fart...good on ya for getting back in thesaddle. You should know not to trust the weather man any further than 1 hour in advance in our province. Here's some pics of my weekend, no mulie again![:@]

Skeet,

Ya, I had read that in BB. It just goes to show that even SERM is starting to face reality. I doubt they would have caved so easily if they weren't already having doubts. Hopefully this will be a catalyst for them to move more into the educating hunters and living with the disease phase of things. Good on GD for starting a movement. Hopefully it doesn't go to his head

Great pics as always JD.

YF, tough luck on the big boy. I know exactly how you feel. Good on ya for getting back at it. Good luck!

In other news, I went out and missed a shot at a big deer last weekend. Moral of the story is ask what distance the borrowed rifle is sighted for. oh well, I know I missed clean because he was back the next night.

Which brings me to last night. We went back to try for the big guy again even though it was windier that h*ll. luckily the deer need to cross a wide open strip of pasture to get to the bush they stage in before heading for an alfalfa field. With about 1/2 hour left, I passed on a plain jane 4x4 that was a nice deer but just not that interesting. we repositioned a bit for the last 15 minutes and got lucky when a buck emerged following three does. With light fading we conferred and agreed that it was "the buck" as he appeared to have the same characteristics of "the buck" so I leveled off and shot. We backed off for an hour or so to get the flashlights and drop off the guns. We found blood immediately but the trail ran cold after only a few feet. We split up and walked about 50yds apart into the bush in the general direction the buck had taken. Luckily Mat found him within 150yrds. It turns out he was not "The buck" but as you can see from the pictures he has some non-typ stuff going on and a small droptine. Moral of the story: be damn sure the buck in front of you is "the buck" when shooting in low light. Overall i'm quite pleased with him as character generally impresses me more than score anyway. Once the skull is bleached he'll look pretty good on the wall.

Good luck all, next stop for me will be Sask in late Nov.

Nice deer Sask! I'd be proud of him for sure...you are sounding like you get to pick & choose from some monsters. I'm totally going to take you up on your offer if things don't go well for us up north this year. Well done!!

Thanks JD. Too bad I didn't pick the right monster The deer I was after was a wide, heavy 5x5 but not very tall. We guessed he'd be in the low 160's. I'm going to get out with the video camera and try rattling in some bucks in the next week or so. I've gotta do something to keep myself occupied. If I keep shooting deer early like this you'll definatey have to come up one of these years just so I'll have something to do during the rut
