I should be studying for exams for cripes sake!
Reading this thing instead, o well.

Heres a pic of an acquaintence who hunted this buck for 6 years, before connecting on him, last day of our muley season, this past Dec. 10th.

He has pics and sheds of him four of the past six years, and he has shrunk in both body weight and horn size. At his premium he was 225 gross. although his new gross hasnt been released since the guy is going to publish, he will be lucky to just break 200''.

A true British columbia Muley;

Here is a picture of the buck in his prime, through a spotting scope.
on a side note the hunter wounded the buck a few weeks back, albeit not mortally.

And finally, one more - his sheds that scored 225 gross - the year the above picture was taken. If you compare it to the harvest photo, you can see the loss in mass.

Skeeter...funny enough we do the same thing. Now that my son is walking (kinda) he can get out with us instead of stay in the car seat. Thing is...how does a guy scout in the summer? I scout year round, but the thing is all hell breaks loose when hunting season comes around. My muliespot is 2 hours away and my Northern Whitetail spot is 6. So really what can a guy do? I tried that new place this year only 1/2 hour from home only to find moose, does and very little buck sign. WTF!!! I need to move out of the city to really do some scouting. That's one of the reasons i wanted a camera. See if it's worth chasing the woods out there. I'm upsetting myself[:@]Man I can't wait for gophers...I'm a friggin pro when it comes to them!

Stiff upper lip JD:) ventilating some gophers in the spring will make you feel better. If not, let me know and i'll have a big wt tied up for you next fall;):D.

do you do much shed hunting? I've found that it's an excellent way to beat cabin fever and at the same time find out what survived the season. Good scouting too as the deer often end up using the same areas in winter as they do in the early fall. I'm at the point now where I look forward to sheddin' as much as hunting.

skeeter 7MM 12-12-2006 10:22 PM

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!

JD, for me summer scouting is really nothing other than watching antlers grow, seeing potential, getted reved and looking forfood source hot spots. As far as patternsother than maybe a few weeks in sept. things change as the fall progresses, especially mulies! I have found the best non hunting time to scout is now, they are still in rut patterns and the sign will be freshened up as the final 2 ruts occur. Essentially you are scouting them as if you were hunting them a few weeks ago for theprimary rut timeframe. You can really learn a lot to where your summer bucks range to to find love and then start looking at the transition between, if there are any. Of course this time of year comes with other concerns months previous of living it and breathing itplus getting ready for the season...so time is limited but after the hussle and bussle it still is good right up till they start yarding. Shed hunting the deer often yard up and this means the potential of finding antlers may never see again because of this migration if you will. Doesn't always hold true for all areas but for the most part that has been my experience. It still is a wonderful time to walk your terrain and get to know it. With the leaves off you can see things more clearly than in springtime or summer. Bonus is finding antlers without taggin' them and busting coyotes along the way;). I don't stop scouting once the season has begun, in fact this where I spend the bulk of my time doing the grunt work while actually hunting. No sunday hunting offers this on a weekly basis if you can get away but like you I travel to some of the areas i hunt so I incorporate it into the days events. In early fall the mid day is often a wash so instead of sitting starring at a tree or doing nothing I use the down time to scout on these further from home trips. Even while actively hunting I scout, hey you have to be in the field anyway might as well use it to find the spot within the spot then just sitting their hoping your in the right place. I am not suggesting you tromp all over hells acre or in your pre-determined "hotspot" but rather always be looking by doing it smartly.

As far as the closer spots keep looking my friend. Does with fawns = daddy. If it is a dud, move on to another spot. Lots of time and you always have your original spots to fall back on. Never be scared of virgin territory, at worst you wasted a day or 2, then again you may just find your new "hotspot";).

Aye, I too need to do more scouting this year. thing is I will miss opening deer season for the sheep hunt. Good thing is that the drainages ill be hunting for sheep have the highest densities of elk populations in BC. my information friend took 3 rams and 3 6 point ek outta this are in 5 days last year!:D

Tag limits
Deer: 3 aggregate provincial limit. you cannot have more thanone species from any one region in BC.
Moose: 1
Elk: 1
Black Bear: 2/3
Sitka blacktail: 15
Cougar: 1
grizz: LEH Only, 1
Sheep: 2/3 (Dont shoot anything under 8 years, or under full curl - cant hunt sheep for 3 years as a penalty)
Goat: 1

I thinkt hat covers it all?

Good point Skeeter. I've only really been actively shedding for 3 or 4 years now and it seems that the mild winters have kept the deer from yardingas much in that time. Last year they stayed pretty spread out (at least up here) since we didn't have any snow till January.

EARLY listen up and listen good. Go to a site called photobucket and register on the site with a username and password. This is a free site that i like to use to upload my pics onto. Ok u still with me? good

Login and go to where it says upload images on the right hand side. Click browse and all your computer files will open. Pic the folder that you have your scanned images in. then double click on what image you want. Then click upload, rinse and repeat.;)

Now to post a pic in the post it will involve some copy and pasting, hope your down with that. Copy the image url of the pic from phtobucket. Should appear directly below the picture. it will be www.phtobuketearlyinpic3himandhisdeeror something like that depending on what you saved it as. Now copy that image url and paste it into here in between and your good to go. So type it exaclty like this . Takes you 2 minutes.

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!

Early, hia's tutorial is excellent. the nice thing about photobucket is that it automatically resizes your pictures so that they won't be too big to post. Very easy to do once you get the hang of it.

For those of you shed hunters out there. When do you generally start looking? The hunting buddy in HP has already picked up a nice fresh moose paddle. I know they are the first to shed but i think with the snow and cold weather last month it might be an early shedding year. I usually start at the end of Jan but always find the majority in the spring after snow melt. I don't have a sled or quad so that tends to limit how many miles I can put on. Once the snow melts i'm much more mobile.

Hiawatha 12-13-2006 11:25 AM

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!

It really varies in my area especially because of the snow. The earliest i have ever found a bone was boxing day while feeding the cows i picked up a real nice 5 set by the chop bunks. The problem i have is time for one beacause i am always away from home, but the snow kicks a guy in the junk. If the heavy snow hits after most have shedded then its pretty uneventful until May or so. It may not be that bad this year, there is a ton of snow at home right now however its been nice the past few days causing it to melt a bit. Once it gets bitter cold again the snow cover will be like a rock so any shed should stay ontop. the question is how much fresh snow wil we be getting in the Febuary/March stage.

Tiny, have family on the island where the blacktails use their front lawn as a bedding and food source. These ones aren't the smastest of the species but then again anything urbanized gets dumbed down:). Look and stout(run) like muliewith the bucks wearinga smaller version of the classic whitetail rack.

Around home the competition is fierce now for sheds you darn near have to find them warm;)! Feb/March timeframe but depends on the conditions. Earliest I have found sheds - Dec 30th at the lake. I think this year they'll dump them earlier than the previousyears on the account of snow and stress that brings. I hope the cut barley will still hold my deer in the ML zone I would love to find a few sheds from this years deer. Usually they pick up and move southwest or N. I haveyet to find one of thebucks I was targeting in this area, as the area to the north is pounded and SW is posted up heavy for personal reasons.

JD in regards to the game/scouting cameras what have you dug up? I posted in the forum here and never got a reply, though I asked specifically for digitals for colder weather. I have been talking with a few buddies who are outfitters and theyall state reliability problems after -15 with the new gen stuff. Seem the oldersetups that used the big celled battery pack to run are better once the temp stick drops, ebay has come up dry finding the older models for me. One I am interested in and has got favourable reviews is the Leaf River Digital. I can't find anyone up here who has used it yet in the colder temps. One fella I know has2 and says they are awesome but he was finished prior to Nov this year so never got to test them in the extreme cold. Cabela'shas them on sale for 249.00 right now.

JD IN ALBERTA 12-13-2006 03:33 PM

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!

After alot of research I too have come up empty with more "don't get this model ever". I hear they all are bad in anything -10 and worse, some eat up batteries like they are going out of style. I'm thinking one model but they are slow triggers I hear. I'm making a trip to the states during Christmas holidays and might get something down there if I find a sale. I'm also looking for a blind, scope & a gun so I'm all over the place these days asking questions and looking for deals. My folks are off to Arizona to enjoy their new found retirement and offered to stop by Cabelas to get me anything I need so I have that as a back up as well.
On a side note...I can't believe how ripped off we are getting when it comes to hunting stuff. Compare blinds Wholesale all over $100, the same one at Cabelas is $49 and I saw it cheaper in Vegas this year. Scopes!!! Nikon Monarch $700-800 here, Walmart $399-600. And don't even get me going about guns. When I was in the "gun room" at Cabelas & Bass Pro. I could get a beautiful 101 O/U fully engraved with hard case no scratches for $1000-1200. If you can even find anything like that here (which you can't) would run you well over $3000[:@]I hate the fact we can't get scopes delivered here..such a piss off!!!!

JD, yeah when I was into scouting camreas they were all 35mm at the time Camtrakker was really the only one to buy for up here. NOW a ton to choose from and if you view 10 sites you'll come away with 10 different reviews darn near. From the outfitters perspective the cudde was the most reliablebesides the last gen of digital Camtrakker. As far as new stuff nobody is really impressed so it makes me wonder why spend 250 - 500?? I am wondering about the el cheapo wildview 2 or 3, which run 100 -150 USD. Best I can tell they run 4 c batteries like the LR,etc but also have an option for a 12V SLA to be used in lieu. I am going to do some checking with the battery depo on how a SLA would fair in below zero temps. Was thinking a guy would need some sort of box to keep the weather off the battery, plano make a waterproof gear box that runs 10 bucks which would be large for a 12v SLA battery so you could probably insulate it to a degree??

As far as "No Sale" I frequent them as little as possible. Large majority of my stuff comes via mail orderas well. I have got some great deals on ebay in the past couple years, though you need to know your prices, models, etc and of course be able tostay out of the bidding frenzy ;).

Saskabush, anywhere closegets heat. You should see the Harris area...man talk about a gong show. I swear one day we'll hear a fight broke out over fallen bone!! It's getting silly if you ask me.[:o]

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!

In the news, front page of the S'toon Star and all over the news is the Sasquatch sighting in Northern Saskatchewan this week. There is a picture of the track in the paper but it is very poor quality. What would the suggested gun befor chasing down such primates:D!!!Is placing a box of tim horton donuts on the hansen lake road considered "baiting";)?

A woman from northern Saskatchewan says she saw the legendary sasquatch, and it left behind evidence described by an expert as "the find of the century."
Shaylane Beatty thought she saw a bear by the side of the road on her drive to Prince Albert on Saturday. But as she drove closer, the animal was walking on two legs.
"I've heard the stories before and I didn't believe them. Then I saw the sasquatch," Beatty said.
Driving from Deschambault Lake to do some Christmas shopping on a bright afternoon, the 20-year-old noticed the creature walking along the forest's edge near Torch Lake. It stopped by the side of the road and turned to look at Beatty as she drove by.
About 21/2 metres tall and muscular, with long, floppy arms attached to broad shoulders and covered in dark brown hair, the creature isn't like anything Beatty's seen before, she said.
The shock of seeing such an enormous beast caused a momentary lapse in concentration. Her car swerved and nearly hit the ditch.
"My heart was beating real fast. I was getting dizzy and was short of breath. I kept repeating, 'I can't believe I'm seeing this.' So I pulled over and called my aunt," Beatty said.
Returning to the area the next day, Beatty and her two uncles found in deep snow hundreds of footprints measuring 50 centimetres in length, she said.
"My uncles were struggling to walk through the same snow the sasquatch just breezed through," Beatty said.
Even by jumping, the two men couldn't match the creature's stride, she added.
The tracks were followed until the evening, when darkness prevented further investigation.
"What Shaylane saw is definitely some sort of primate," said Tom Biscardi, who's been hunting sasquatches for 33 years and runs www.searchingforbigfoot.com, where photos of the footprints can be viewed.
The footprints are impressive evidence of the creature's northern wanderings, he added, calling them "the find of the century."
"This particular Bigfoot has found solace in that area. There's probably a cave somewhere that the creature sleeps in," Biscardi said.
Beatty's uncles sent Biscardi, who said he's encountered a sasquatch six times, a hair sample for analysis.
Jeff Meldrum, a professor of anatomy at Idaho State University and author of Sasquatch: Legend Meets Science, said three sasquatch sightings have been recorded in Saskatchewan.
"As long as there's forest cover and an area is sparsely populated, there is space to harbour any number of creatures," Meldrum said.
After viewing pictures taken by Beatty's uncles, Meldrum said the length of the footprints are in the range of others already found in North America, but the lack of detail leaves unanswered questions about their validity.
"Given the quality of the photographs, it's impossible to render any meaningful analysis," he said.
But the combination of a personal sighting and physical evidence is intriguing, and if samples of scat or urine are found along the trail of footprints, that would be compelling evidence, Meldrum said.

Just Back From Wainright Base Hunt

Well alberta guys the CWD is getting closer to the middle of the province as of 2 weeks ago according to the bioligist at the base who tested a doe for CWD in a place 30 kms out of Wainright that starts with an A. Sorry I don't remember the name of the town. I shot a few mulie does for meat and my partner took one too, thinking it was a doe ,but ended up being a button buck. LOL. Meat is meat huh! We got a blizzard on Friday after we passed up a few deer and then Saturday we got snowed out. Never have they had a draw end up getting canceled due to snow. A guy found a shot elk 8x8 that was eaten and scored 387 rough score from the early season. We ended up seeing 30 head of elk nobulls and about 16 moose and some monster bulls. Tons of mulies does and that was it for a day and a 1/2 hunting. At least we got our meat. We had to surrender the heads for testing of CWD too.Sure saw a ton of game for the time we were out and about though. I'll definately go back in 3 years again. Skeeter I heard this snow we got came in fromnorthern Saskatchewan. You can have it back and get Hia to help you shovel it out k! LMAO
Hey Early get that deer posted bud.

YF, I was looking in the coffee room here at work and according to the map the F&W guys have up on the wall there was a positve test near Edgerton (SW of wainwright) so I guess the rumours are true. It's too bad, the inevetable outcome will be tonuke all the deer in wainwright.

Post hunting season depression officially hit today. The mulie doe and cow elk season ended last night. I've heard rumours of antlers on the ground already so maybe it will be worth going for some hikes after the holidays.

Merry Christmas guys, and happy New Year:D

YF the only way that snow came from me was via snowblower and a hard SE wind;)! We got gobs of it here. I had to shovel out the back gate to get to the big green container last night as some doof plowed the back alley which left a 2ft ridge[:@]! Sounds like you had a decent end to the 2006 season, congrats.

Bad news about the CWD test positive though! Like Sb points out that will surely bring anon slaught onto the area for which it was found in...just ask the makota hills and Sask landing folk here. Hopefully not but be prepared.

Well as of sunday the deer at my ml spot are still wearing, I was removing my box blinds via skud (skidoo) and saw some bucks. The scrapes are fresh and more rubs in the areas I did a quick once over. Included wasmy fella following a young doe. I tried to snap a picbut my Digi SUCKS so it looks like 2 blobs!!!Thinking it is time to give mine to my daughter and move into something with a larger optical zoom and image stabilizer. Can't deceide which one, was thinking DSLR as I have an SLR already but weight/bulk, etc will mean even less likely to tote it. So now I am between the Sony H2 or H5 &Canon IS3all have 12x optical zooms/image stabilizer, etc. H2 has the inside track as I can get it for 369.99, but we'll see what boxing day sales may bring:D!

PS To the frozen pond guys make sure to test the ice if you plan on going onto it, heard of 9 skidoos going through la ronge already and few trucks that took a dip. In our province with all the snow that fell it means flood water and poor ice on protected lakes so use caution!

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!

Ice conditions are pretty poor on some lakes up here as well. Part of my job involves setting up "Thin Ice" signs on the aerated lakes in this region. I just about went for a swim on Swan lake (near valleyview)the other day. Most if not all of the lakes we deal with have some flood water or iced over flood water. Be careful if any of you head out.
