2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!

Ag,
In alberta you need a hostto hunt biggame. A hunter host can take guys fromCanada & USas long is is not for profit. Though Alien non-residents, those who are not canadian are stipulated to differentregulations under the hunter host program, as is the host permit. That is my take on it any way.I have a very good buddy in Alberta and I have hunted with him on a couple of occasions since he moved from here(been awhile though), he required a hunter host permit and I needed theto buy thetags, win, etc.
Saskatchewan you can hunt birds(waterfowl & upland), whitetails and black bear solo (no host required[:@]).
In BC - Canadian resident and BC resident apply for an accompaning permit, of which only 1 can be given to that BC resident and 1 hunter per hunting season. This also extends to immediate family members from other then canada(alien non-residents). I believe it is a 1 on 1 only thing, though I am not sure if you can hunt more than one species if they are open at the same time or not? Other than that as a canadian resident I can apply for a license then find a guide to hunt with. I know a guy who does a swap hunt with a fella form BC every few years, whitetails for elk or moose is what they do. I am not sure all the particulars what can or can not be hunted, process, etc so I'd contact the DNR for more precise info or your hunting regs for general items(possible links to further info).

So then, if say you wanted to come hunt mountain goat, and me and you got the applicable 1 on 1 accompanying permit, that would work?
If I understand you correctly yuou guys can hunt any species?
If thats the case that is cool, I should start lookin for AB/SK residents who want to shoot a moose/elk/goat etc that they cant find in their province! lol
Nice pics JD, as usual. Weird thing on that goose - I duno if Id eat it?
One time i was mulie scouting and I jumped a doe, she had a huge tumor on her neck that looked exactly like a bell on a moose, cept it was about the size of a basketball[&o]
Kinda strange - makes you wonder what animals were exposed to to get cancer?

Weird lookin rack on that goose there jd, cool pics though. Skeeter i could almost swear that you spent time planning your next few days
best of luck to ya and find some rubs for ol hia. Ag sorry i ain't much help on the bc hunting laws.
Interesting develpoment on my new hunting spot. I just got off the phone with my best friend who bought this alfalfaland and is away drilling by grand praire. He has hunted that land for a few years now and claims the big boys all like to follow that run i have my stand adjacent to. My gut insticts were correct in placing the stand and i really think i got a shot this year at breakin my boonie cherry. Me and him talked bout the big deer that were taken in that mile radius over the past 6 years or so and the numbers do not lie, the pigs are there for some reason. F i am pumped, bring on friday baby.

Wish you the best Hia, JD, and Skeet this weekend!
If you shoot a booner ill lose it!
Im heading out with a large (4 person) crew this weekend, to do alot of hunting. Were hunnt hit the bush hard, and maybe know a few deer down.
Im only shooting new records for myself - 160" + for mule and 130"+ for whites, so well see how ti goes. Will be exciting if anyone else gets anything though, as its always great to get out!

Nice to read that everybody is getting out and about so far. I just recently got back from a 8 day bull trout inventory on the Kakwa River southwest of Grand Prairie. Lots of fun and beautiful scenery, one of the few places left in this province that hasn't seen a lot of activity (that will be changing soon). The highlight of the trip was getting to hold and release a 74cm bull trout, not many fish get that big anymore.
As for hunting, I've been out for grouse a few times. There seems to be a pile of them around this year. I actually ran out of shells the other day (I guess two heaping handfuls wasn't enough).
I also made my first deer/elk trip of the year tonite. It wasn't much of a hunt. Infact, it was more of an armed scouting trip to see what has changed since my butt hardly left the truck seat. I did see a pile of WT does, some mulie does and a pair of impressive mulie bucks. To top the evening off, as I was heading home with a few minutes of light left I decided to check the oat field I shot my bear in. This particular field has been well used by elk in the past but all I have ever seen is a few WT does and bears. It is fairly close to a main road and gets road hunted fairly hard so I wasn't really expecting a lot as I drove the trail in. Well Sh
t! it was full of elk and yours truly was caught with his pants down. They saw me before I saw them and were gone. I hope they give me a second chance as i will now be glueing my ass to a ground blind somewhere in that field for the forseeable future in hopes of filling my cow tag.
The field itself borders a large river valley to the east which is where they ran to when I spooked them and a smaller ravine to the south. Road access is from the west. Unfortunately, there's no seismic lines or other cutlines to set up on. it's pretty much solid bush to the east and south. Any of you elk experts have any suggestions on how to get a crack at them? Should I try setting up further back in the bush or simply hope they show up in the field again?

Im by no means an expert, but I would set up a small ground blind on the edge of some cover, and call with a "Fighting Cow Call".
ive only hunted elk a couple times, and have had huge success with this call. Get skeet/JD opinions tho

Whacked up my partners mulie doe and another guys whitetailhe arrowed yesterday. Wow them deer aren't fat yet but the meat looked & smelled awesome....ummmmm deer meat!!![8D]
AG, like I saidI am not sure of all the particulars, so check your regs or with the dnr to find out all the ins and outs of this process, species, etc. I am sure you'd find a few takers on a swap!
Hia...you suck!!
LOL good luck bud I hope you get your pig this weekend. I hear your area got 2" of rain saturday, here at the house we picked up 1" 3 10ths...I thought that was a lot!!! Got some wet snow this am, never stayed but boy is she cool -7 temp tonight they say with a high of +2 tomorrow. All week - nights and hardly a double digit day high in sight. Could be a great weekend for the feed bag. I hope to get some of your karma and find me mulie buck to send packin' with the fify cal.
Saskabush, nice to see yeah again..good luck!! As far as elk....road hunted hard, spooked at site of you? I'd say find the trail and get back off the field edge, if at all possible. If you still have some leaves look for the trails that are bare...thats your elk moving
. If not hopefully you have some moisture to point to where they enter the oat field or where they stage. Not sure when 1st(peak) rut is but if its been a few weeks, you may attempt cow calling, spike squeals or immature chuckles. If it is apparent no cow will even be close to the 2nd estrus then I'd just stick to your cow/calf/herd talk and hope it lures out something by way of safety in a familar voice. It's kind of a crap shoot what to do when calling, Ibelieve low keyed cow calling never really hurts anything.
JD, good stuff. Maybe when he hit the fence post he busted up...lol!! Heard a rumor of a 20lb honker brought in the SWF from the tisdale area last week...that is greater and then some,if true. Bloody geese have been doing fly byes of the house every night darn near for the past 3 weeks..mostly snows and specs. Boys down the street have been pouding birds, 62 geese this morning butmostly snows. I used to be into goose hunting, really should devote some time to the feathersbut snows nah...give me mallards, canadas and specs though.
Keep on keeping on fellas...good luck
