Just got back from archery hunt for moose in 15B, NW Ont. last weeK. Only saw 4 moose and no opportunities for a shot. Too hot I think. Moose responded to calling but just not very aggressive and wouldn't come out of the swamps. Gun hunt starts this weekend so the orange army will be on the move. I guess we'll wait for the deer rut and hope for better luck. Anyone else have the same problem with moose this year?

Got back on Saturday afternoon after a couple of weeks in the bush hunting Moose.

3rd week in September was a drag...very warm and windy weather made it tough to attempt any calling and when I did there was NO response.

Last week was better.

Monday evening I called out a nice 40 inch bull which came CRASHING and GRUNTING through the bush for about 20 minutes only to stop facing me at 50 yards upwind. If I had known he was going to come out upwind I would have left my calling site and moved toward him and waited for him to pass by. This is the first time a bull has EVER come from upwind side of me when calling...they usually slip around downwind as they have in the past. Anyways he seen where calling was coming from and stood there facing me for about 2 minutes(never offering a broadside or any other feasable shot angle)then he made a VERY quick 180 and 2 steps into the bush and he was gone...had I been ready and holding at full draw I may have been able to get off a quick but NOT ideal shot. However, in hindsight I am glad I attempted no shot as it would have been dark soon and a tracking a wounded Moose from hastey shot would have been worse then not getting one at all....

Later that week I set-up too close to a Moose on Wedsday morning and called a Bull Friday morning which scented me and also Friday evening I called in a bull which was too scared to come in and I ran out of legal shooting light so had to leave him.

I beleive that Friday I also may have had Bear or Wolf coming in hard. The animal made no sounds other than breaking and snapping of brush. I grunted VERY loudly at it several times and it came running in faster. I whistled loudly at it and it stopped coming. This was scary situation because it was a VERY wet year and there are NO berries in the bush and little food for the bears so one always has to be aware when calling Moose you just may attract Wolves or Bears.

On the posititve side...

I was camped at lake with VERY good Walleye fishing and there were a TONNE of Ruffed and Sharptailed grouse to eat.

I may try to fill my tag in rifle season just to put some meat in the freezer.

So far I am 1 out of 4 for my Archery Moose hunting. My first year was a bust. Got 1 my second year. Now on a 2 year drought....maybe next year. [/align]__________________

Here is a picture or where I got my Moose 2 years ago. I got him on other side of beaver dam. If you look at otherside of dam you can see where the road used to go. The beavers dammed right over top of the road. We had 13 inchs of rain this year so beavers have been very busy...
