RE: Canadian Whitetails

I've never brought a book or anything with me as I have to be Johhny on the spot with the place I hunt. It does get long sometimes but I just keep reminding myself a brute could come out any second. I'll usually break it up as well, sit for 3-4 hrs in the am with rattling when I get tired or bored, then do pushes or pheasant in the afternoon (lunch), then back in the stand for prime time. I guess thats why I respect guy's who can pass on the smaller bucks and wait for the big boy. I'm rtying to be one of those hunters now, but I'm usually going home empty handed:(. Ah well, I know good things come to those who wait. That's how I'll keep hunting and hopefully you guy's will read all about my story in Big Buck Magazine:)

Good luck this weekend all!

Rest assured your not alone JD. However you can't kill a monster without a tag so it is part of the package when your a horn hunter! I must say never try to be one of those hunters, just be yourself. If a buck makes you tingle let her rip!

I hunt like you little breaks to maintain sanity, focus, etc. Will see if I can cut the mustard of sitting still in one spotand still remaining gung ho...[&:].

Good luck tomorrow!

Just got in from Lake of The Woods, Ont. Seen several deer and one very nice buck that didn't offer me a shot. I did take a smaller 8-point but that was no comparision to the 12-point my dad took on the 2nd day of the hunt! The local taxidermist said he was a 165-170 class buck! He weighed in right at 315.lbs! Here are a few pics! Enjoy!
(Date was not set right on my camera it was actually 10-31-05)

great buck
Even as a canadian I didnt know people traveled to Ont for deer hunting. Alberta, Sask and Manitoba of coarse, but what do you know that I don't.
Congrats to you and your Dad.

That's a great deer, congrats to both of you. I love the character ofhis left beam - knobby and holes in the beams, always thought they looked cool!

Yeah that was really neat Skeeter. The Conservation Officer said it was where he had worms during velvet.

tangozulu we were hunting on crown land in Lake of the Woods, supposedly the only place you don't have to have a guide in Canada been going there for about 5 years now.

Buckstopper...NICE DEER!!! He's definately a nce buck to be proud of.
Skeeter, that's usually what I end up doing, if the buck makes me tingle I shoot, no second guessing. I did pass up a decent 4x4 mulie this sat since he just wasn't what I was after and I have no regrets. We shot a doe for my cousins freezer but didn't see 1 whitetail. Heard about 100 shots so I know there are (were) deer out there. Any luck for you skeeter?

RE: Canadian Whitetails

Well our South Texas season opened here without much hoopla Saturday. I took a youth from my church and though we saw 9 diiferent bucks I did not let him pull the trigger. He is somewhat of a greenie, he told me he had never even seen a buck on the trips he has made before with friends. I was trying to teach him patience and the "let em grow routine" We did have a good time being out in the wild and I have about 45 minutes of video which I know in 15 years he will cherish.

Now on with the show, I have seen that some parts of Saskatchewan are getting some flurries which is a good sign. I leave for Edmonton early Saturday morning and will make the drive to Peirceland Sunday. I have both my 300WSM and 375HH shooting 2-2 1/2" high at 100 yards as I have heard in the colder temps they will shoot a bit lower. Most likely will fire a couple of rounds at camp to make sure.
My nephew call me this morning and told me he was able to getthe "shakes" out of his Bowtech yesterday as he was able to put down a nice south texas 5x5 which green scored 152BC and change. He, myself and a friend are getting all jiggy on next weeks hunt!

Lately I can not seem to get this song out of my head.....

let it snow let it snow.....LET IT SNOWWWWWW:D

Here's to the Crown

I think I would hang pretty close to home with bucks like that around. You would be hardpressed to get a better buck anywhere.

RE: Canadian Whitetails

Shed way to go on your successful season...that is a great whitetail you arrowed!!!! Where I am hunting I haven't seen to many that have that chocolate colouring to their horns, they are a lot lighter but one can't have a collection of all the same kind any way! I may head north to try to fill my second either, so still may get a dark set.

Hia, did you get one of them bucks you were chasing? Details???????

JD, didn't hunt this weekend but did some early am scouting yesterday and saw some great signs. I caught what I believe is one of the bucks I have been waiting on.I never got the best look at him but find it hard to believe thattheir are 2 mainframe 4x4's with a drop tine in this area that I wouldn't alreadyhave noticed this fact;). The bad news if so he has moved off but the good news I have permission to hunt this tract of land as well. I found his play ground - rub and scrape littered. I am planning on putting up a blind in a skinny meadow on weds and possibly rattling it mid day later this week. I am giving her nails starting weds through till next weds.I also saw the 5x5 I passed running a doe, she wasn't anywhere close to willing but he was still giving it a go. They crossed right in front of where I was positioned and believe I may have misjudged him slightly, heis better beams than I credited him last week with...no regrets though. Best of luck to you this week.

DoubleA, yes we have had some white stuff and lots of frost. The weathermen can't agree on a long range though, some say warming while other are saying cooler. It'll be what it'll be but you should be ok, as the signs sure point to the rut is approaching. IMO the chase phase or late pre rut is dynamo as well, you will hit one of these phases up that way next week FO SHO! The worse part with warming trends are the higher chance of E or S flows...something few bank on this time of the year. It can make it tough to hunt choice spots as they expect N or W flows this time of year. This has been happening more the past few years so I would expect the outfittershave made plans around these flows...like I and other hunters have. Enjoy your hunt and best of luck to you/your hunting party.

I think this picture is ok quality. I snappeda pic in part of hisrubline when scouting yesterday am. No deer but at least sign one visits the area...lol.

agaucher, congrats on your mulie!!!

I haven't taken a good mulie buck for quite some time (8 years to be exact). Here we have a draw for either sex muliesand it takes 3-5 years to get a tag, depending on the zone, preference points and applicants/tag allocation. The last time I was drawn for either-sex was 2003 and never notched the tag as I was only shooting a book deer, seen some but things just never worked out for me that year.Maybe next year I'll get a tag again.

Gotcha skeeter.
That one above is my largest to date. There are better quality pics in a thread int he big game hunting forum if you are interested.
Thanks though. Likewise, next year its time to start looking for 175 plus.

Kind of a tough question guys... If my mulie scores 160, what would make it jump to 175? Mass? points? spread? I know they all contribute but what i guess I am asking is what would be the most obvious.

Thanks :D

Pierceland, Saskatchewan is my final destination. I am praying for cold and snowy weather for next week and also a few does that are in estrus to come by my stand.:)

skeeter 7MM 11-11-2005 11:02 PM

RE: Canadian Whitetails

DoubleA, you might not find much in the way of snow and at present the forecast isn't great for cold weather during the day, however they are often wrong! BUT you should get the doe's in estrus wish, signs here are pointing towards it is very near. They are calling for a few cold overnight temps next week which never hurts.

I have seen an increase in the bucks attitude, they are starting to tail does, stinkand wander. The pecking order is also being dealt with and general nervousness is in the air when bucks enters the scene...these are all signs that soon mean women being courted. I can only assume the NW is getting close and I have seen the most rutting activity in that area around the 16-18th. I am heading to the cabin next week for a day or two for a change of scenery so I am hoping they are acting like around home.

Best of luck and hope you get apierceland monarchs! Who are you hunting with up there, anyways??? (maybe it is were you?... by now) Enjoy

Hey JD and skeeter, I'm back from the Zone! By the way zulu, I didn't get a buck or a shot but I don't regret spending the "big bucks" for my hunt in Alberta, which is a great place to hunt Giants. I had a great time. JD, sorry I couldn't hook up with you but I had a problem getting my main piece of luggage from Toronto. I finally got it the day after I arrived.
I saw about 18 or 20 deer during my 6 day hunt. Five bucks that I saw for sure and some I couldn't identify. No monsters. I brought two in with the Can. One decent 8pt came in from behind but I couldn't turn around for a shot without spooking him. It was neat! I saw 5 coyotes and had 2 cow moose come within 20 yrds of my stand, that was awsome!
I stuck to my guns and hunted hard, dark to dark all six days. I also had a doe that must have been around 200lbs within 20yrds. These deer are huge! Just for the record, I will be going back next year for sure. My guide put me in some great spots. Funnels and travel corridors ect. That is some prime habitat up there. Also the weather wasn't too bad except for that clipper that went through on Thursday. From calm and70 to 45mph wind and 40degree temps in five mins. Bizzar!
How are you two guys making out up to now? I'm looking forward to hearing from the both of you soon!:D

Early in, to bad you never filled your tag but sounds like you had a good trip and enjoyed it...which is the main thing.

For me season has been great but unfortunately things haven't panned out like I had been dreaming. My ML zone bucks are playing hard to get and whileI have seen afew nice bucks that way the ever thought of "what if" pops into my mind and I end up passing. I took a breakfor acouple days this week from my spots in the ML and headed north to see if I couldnotch my forest only either-sex tag. I ended up rattling in this 5x5, I never got a super look at him as he was trying to slip to my back door but obviously figured looked pretty good at that point so slipped him a 150gr NBT.
What you all think he'd score...just curious?

Still hoping to get a crack with my first either-tag, I have a few more weeks till the 05' season is in the books(Dec. 3).

Best of luck to all and keep us posted.

Skeeter that's one beautiful buck you got, you should be real pleased with yourself. I know I would be. And youcan take another buck? In Pa they only let us take one buck per year. Yes, even though I didn't get a buckin Alberta I really had a great time. That is some unbelievable habitat. My guide put me in some awsome setups and he was always on top of the wind direction! He really knows the farms he has access also. Like I said, I did see at least 5 bucks I could identify and I wouldn't see 5 in one week here in Pa so I'm happy with that. I will be going back next year! You can count on it.

BEAUTIFUL BUCK SKEETER!
I am crossing my fingers to get one that nice on my trip down to your province this weekend. I am no pro by any means, but I would guesstimate 150? it is hard for me to judge mass... how think are his bases, and how long are those back tines. Definatly a wall hanger in my books:D:D

Well good luck with your other tag, if I dont talk to yah before Saturday ill post pics of any buck I may get when I get home.

Good luck!

RE: Canadian Whitetails

Thanks guys. Yeah thats what I was thinking as well but a rough score shows he might be in fact a sleeper. I am waiting till my partner gets back he is working for an outfitter in the NE and took my measurement stuff with him...he should be back next week.

Early in, yes the past couple of years sask. residents have had a 2nd either - sex tag available for the forest zones only. It is a great opportunity and as well good for management as he deer herds are thriving in the forest or close to the forest areas. The rest of the province is 1 either-sex tag per year. Some zones you can also buy an anterless deer tag as well for whitetails.

Ag, his mass isn't huge by no stretch but average for a mature sask. whitetail. 5 and change at the base and carries itwell in H2/H3. H4 is around 4". I suspect he'll bring 38-40 in H measurements to the score card. Like I said I haven't offically taped him yet but his G2 & 3's are double digits (10-12" range) and he has good 4's as well around 7". Brows or G1's are weak at 4" range. Inside spread is 15" range and beams are pretty good 23" area. FYI I shot this deer approx. 1 hour east of Meadow Lake, north of where my cabin is located. I never saw a boot track in the area I was hunting and only a few trucks with orange in them driving the bush roads;)!

Ag,the rut around home is just getting going. I would think you'll see some rutting action next week. Best of luck to you.

I am heading out Saturday to see if I can't notch my remaining either-tag.

Well boys I'm back as well. Overall the weather was very warm & windy and the hunting pressure got brutal. As I walked to my stand the first day I almost tripped on 2 other guy's and found another one in a tree 10 feet from my stand. Needless to say I was pissed[:@]but managed to sneak up on a buck but passed. The guy shot a 4x4 directly under my stand that morning and another 5x5 ran away. We really didn't see much in the way of big bucks. On Sat. I ended up passing on a few small bucks and decided on taking this guy. Not the biggest buck but it's my first non-typ. so I really liked him. Later in the day I pushed out this 5x5 whitetail for my cousin. I passed up on a w.t. buck last week because I couln't tell how big he was and the rest is history. Too warm and alot of wind! I think I'm done for the season as the temps look to be hot the rest of the week and my taxidermy bill is close to a grand. Oh well next year I'll look for a big Whitetail as my mulie tag will be another4 year wait. Pics to follow.

Skeeter great buck!! I'd guess 140-150 for sure maybe into the 160's.

Early, I'm glad you had a blast...it sucks to hold out and come up empty but that's the way she goes up here. I'm still debating on the wt I passed up but you gotta do it sometimes and it keeps the fires burning for next season.
