RE: Canadian Whitetails
looks great imo.
I do most of my bucks that way, regardless of their size unless their 'mounters'. I usually use a plaque, but thats just personaly preference. |
RE: Canadian Whitetails
Skeeter, to be honest with you I have no idea:(I'm going to be asking around and getting some info from friends who went out this year, and people from Sask (which there is no shortage here:)) I have a feeling we'll just start driving east and start from scratch. Do some on the go scouting. Another buddy got a 155 and so did his partner. I'm liking the stories they are telling me.
The racks look good! I like to put them on plaques myself with a picture or bullet (if I find it). p.s. If you guy's are looking for a gift to tell the wife to get you, check out Wal-Mart. They have some decent dvd's especially the jim shockey Giant Whitetails. It's awesome!!! JDinAB |
RE: Canadian Whitetails
JD, where abouts in alberta do you hunt?
I am heading down to taber area just prior to my annual sask hunt next year for w hitetails. Are there any management units north of edmonton that are open to Elk for canadian residents? Meaning I live in BC, not alberta :D |
RE: Canadian Whitetails
ag...I'm in Calgary but hunt all over Alberta. I'm pretty sure there are I'm guessing around the Peace area. Check the on-line regs for specifics.

RE: Canadian Whitetails
Thanks guys. The first attempt I was referring to was on Moose BTW. I have done numerous deer in euro style and all have been plaqued, however moose skulls are well LARGE.
For S&G's I set it on the fireplace mantle beside the christmas tree last night and never said a word to the wife. She just called me on the cell to voice her thoughts....hohoho! She actually thinks it looks pretty cool. Hey maybe some hope for my elk euro that I did a number of years agoto adorn the stairwell to upstairs...well maybe not but I am trying!!![8D] I plan to just clean off & bleach the skull cap of the deer. It will go up in my second home...the garage. Which is known as the lodge. It is the place where plans are formulated, work is done and lots of BS is told...the odd brew gets kicked back as well. :) JD, thanks for the christmas hint.Sounds like you have some sources to help with your direction. If you got a bit of time you'll make out alright, however good deer exist all over the province the trick is finding them. |
RE: Canadian Whitetails
Skeeter,
Nice looking bucks you guys got there! Well bud I managed to put an arrow in a pretty decent 4x4 the second day of my late archery season. The story and pix are posted on Hunting Nets Home page in the "field journals" or just click below... http://www.huntingnet.com/fieldJournal/fieldJournal_detail.aspx?nID=211 Happy Holidays guys! |
RE: Canadian Whitetails
Northern Manitoba has some tremendous whites but Saskatchewan i think has the kings.
|
RE: Canadian Whitetails
Hi all,
I'm new to the website but thought I would add my buck to those big guys taken up north. I'm a born and raised Sask boy but moved to Alberta (like most of Saskatchewan) for school and work. I always used to make fun of the Alberta bucks compared to the Sask ones until I got my buck this year. He Green scored 170 2/8 typical but he has some serious mass for a typical withbases over 6"and an average circumference of over 5.5." and a 24" inside spread. So I guess Alberta has some good bucks too. Bottom line nowhere compares to the great white north. ![]() |
RE: Canadian Whitetails
Damn sam, that's a monster. Congrats and welcome. I started this thread and it seems to be REAL popular! I hunted in the Edmonton Bow Zone this past Nov. formy first time. Didn't get a buck but had an awesome time none the less. Bucks like the one you posted are why I will be back in the Bow Zone next year! Again, welcome.

RE: Canadian Whitetails
Sam...nice pig!! He's a brute, where abouts are you in AB?

RE: Canadian Whitetails
Hey JD in Alberta,
Nice mulie, what's the spread on him? Nice mount too, where didyou get him done? I was raised on mulie hunting back in Sask, still got a soft spot for them, used to love to early season muzzleloader hunts in the south, everybody is all about the whitetails but it's tough to beat a good mulie hunt in my books. As for where I got this buck, like they say "I could tell you but I'd have to kill you ;)" |
RE: Canadian Whitetails
Sam he's just shy of 26", I liked him because of thenon-typ. don't come across too many. I have a friend that does taxidermy here in Calgary. As for yours...didn't want to know where you got him, just where you live in Ab? I know hunting spots are secret here :D

RE: Canadian Whitetails
Hi JD, I have a couple of questions for you. First, my whitetail guide told me he thinks abig mature muley buck is more waryand tougher to get than a mature whitetail, do you concurr? And also, do you have albino and piebalds in Alberta? I have never seen any in my hunting mags. Thanks.
|
RE: Canadian Whitetails
Hey JD
I misunderstood your question about the secret hunting spot, but you are right it's secret...:D I live just outside of Edmonton and hunt north of here usually. I actuallyhunt more moose then whitetail or mulies but if the shot at a decent buck arises I'm not afraid to fill my tags. |
RE: Canadian Whitetails
Early...I love mulies but I still think the whitetail is a touch more wary and smarter. I think any deer has to be quite smart to grow to be old, but I have found whitetails to be like ghosts at times. As for Piebalds and Albinos I've seen pics of albinos but never seen one, no piebalds here as far as I know.
Sam...I do a yearly trip up to Lac La Biche every year for a big W.T. never got a brute yet but I know it'll happen one day. JDinAB |
RE: Canadian Whitetails
JD
Stick with the hunt, you're right one day you will get a chance, remember it only takes once. I take my video camera so if I pass something upI can still take a look later and show my buddies whats I saw. Don't get me wrong as much as I like shoting camera I prefer shooting my 30-06. |
RE: Canadian Whitetails
I go to Ontario Canada once a year to hunt and the reason we dont hear and seemore from up North is because they dont want us going up there and killing big bucks.
|
RE: Canadian Whitetails
There is some decent Alberta Trail CamPictures found here; http://www.albertagame.com/boards/viewforum.php?f=23

RE: Canadian Whitetails
Just got back from Ontario near Dryden. Harvested a couple little guys, but went six for six as a group the lowest scoring 115 and the highest at 155.

RE: Canadian Whitetails
This is a shot of a buck i had to let go while guiding this fall im guesin he'd score n the high 180's maybe 190's typical his g-2's will be over 16 inches and the long sweeping main beams will probably go over 26 inches he is a beautifull buck ive bin chasing for 3 yrs now and i will hopefully catch up with him next fall with my bow.I have also heard there was a 275 non typical taken in sask with archery tackle this fall and i know of a confirmed kill on a 260 non typical Alberta whitetail taken this yr its said to leave u speechless.
|
RE: Canadian Whitetails
One more shot of this buck gives u an idea the length of those mb's
|
RE: Canadian Whitetails

HuntingAlberta wrote: have also heard there was a 275 non typical taken in sask with archery tackle this fall HA, I posted a picture of this buck earlier on this thread but here it is again. It has been confirmed 274 NT Green by B&C scorer, shot first week of archery season (sept. 05'). No word on the official dry score, as of yet. |
RE: Canadian Whitetails
JD, congrats on the new rig...looks very nice. Also nice owl mount.

RE: Canadian Whitetails
Hey folks, thought I would share a pic I took this weekend. Went for a drive and found a field loaded with mulies (I couldn't believe my eyes). Funny thing there were a slough of bucks with bone still. Enjoy!
JDinAB |
RE: Canadian Whitetails
Another bunch (no anlers here)!
|
RE: Canadian Whitetails
JD, you never let us down. Ounce again some neat pics! In the first pic, is that a pipe on wheels for watering the fields? And in the second pick, whatwere you standing on to get that great shot? One last thing, do you ever see whitetails group up like the muleys do? Nice to hear from you JD.:)
|
RE: Canadian Whitetails
early...you got it, it's called a pivot. On the second pic I was on top of a lookout at a dam in southern alberta. Lastly, I have never seen herds like I saw that day (mulies or wt's), well over 150 deer in 4 herds (as you can see). I have seen whitetails like this only once before (but only about 30 in a group) and they were feeding in a field close to city limits prior to any season. I see herds of 10-15 but never 75 in a group like the one field had.

I'll get the video of this hunt,I watched it 2 days ago, what a great deer and another 150 class walks in and tries to fight it as it lays on the ground dead.Oh yeah congrats on your new Tacoma, nice ride. Youngfart ;) |
RE: Canadian Whitetails
hey JD did you get that from albertaoutdoorsmen forums cause i seen that same footage from there and ive got it posted in Deer Hunting and Bowhunting. Oh and early the only time i have seen whitetails bunch like that is in Sask and those were pics that i seen from Saskabush. Also where abouts did you get those pics of the mule deer because another good place for good deer pics is just west of Nanton. Went that way to go to Chain Lakes and seen over 100 deer along the road and the were along right along the fence so hopefully next time i go out that way i can get some pics.

RE: Canadian Whitetails
Thanks lethal, that's intresting.
