Hey Welcom Back Early,

RE: Canadian Whitetails
I arrived back home in Texas late Sunday night after spending 6 long days of hunting near the Meadow lake /Pierceland area of Saskatchewan. The hunting was good, great people and outstanding food. I am a true beleiver now in how the weather effects the hunting, the first 3 days were cool as it dipped below 0 degrees F with snow. My group saw alot of activity. The temps then up from there and you could see the drop off of the deer traveling. The time we spent up there watching buck after buck frantically chasing does was a sight to see for sure. Man those guys just wouldnt give up. I was able to get 2 nice bucks breeding their does on video with one of them taking like 4 mintutes! I went high intentions of getting a 170 class deer with a 300 lb body. I hunted hard for 6 days straight and passed ona couple of150-160's.
I was holding out till the very end, it just didnt happen for me.In the waning minutes on the last evening, a 4x4 came out of the bush chasing does, it happened so fast, only seconds for a shot and I took one instinctively on the run. I have to admit I should have passed on him but the fact is I did not and it'smy mistake. It was a 23" wide8 pt that pushed 130. Man , sitting here typing this frustrates me, I showed the videos of the larger bucks I saw to wife and friends and they all agree I should have taken one of the 5x5's I saw on 3 different occassions, but then ya know what they say about hindsight. All in all, it was a super trip up north, the colder weather was not a problem with me but my guests, a nephew and a dear friend were a bit cold at times. The nephew put his bow up after 2 days of being in a tree stand shivering and took a dandy 5x5 that scored 169bc with a rifle. Another guy took a 164bc 6x6, my bud , in which I really wanted him to get a big buck got a whopper of an 8 pt, this deer was just HUGE. Though the antlers didnt score well butthe outfitter and everyone one agreed it is the epitome of Canadian deer. 300+ lbs, huge neck, thick thick mass and was aged at 6 1/2. The person who I booked this hunt through also showed up(Cabelas) scoredon a unique 5x5, it had 11" G1's. We are looking forward to seeing some of the pics in their catalog. |
RE: Canadian Whitetails
well Double...like I said in an earlier post, it happens to me all too often. I'm staring to learn to take a decent deer anytime you get the chance, then one day the BIG one will be there. Oh well it sounds like you had a good time overall. I heard there was a blizzard last week in Sask. it obviously didn't hit you guy's. I love the colder weather that's why I'm pretty much done this year. How's about putting some pics up, I'd love to see some from your trip.

RE: Canadian Whitetails
JD congrats on your mulie and once again great pics. Your season is wrapped in AB?? Say isn't so!!!! LOL How is the baby doing?? What about Momma?
DoubleA thanks for updating us and great pics. To bad you never got the one, by the looks of it you had a good trip none the less. That week started out looking awesome but really turned poo poo after weds, which always seems to shut them down. You have to consider yourself blessed and lucky to witness a buck breed a doe...believe me that doesn't happen to often. Also you have video memories to last a lifetime, which imo is priceless. I feel your pain about holding out, second guessingand then making a snap decision. My hat goes off to anyone who can sit in a blind for hours on end passing, waiting and hoping their ship might come in that day...cudos! One question will you be back?? BTW, the boys taped my buck from last monday 160 2/8 grossis what they came too. I fleshed him at this pointfor a eurotogo with themoose euroI am doing for the MAN's room. Still got my other tag left and hopingto get out before the close on the 3rd. Lord willing I still may get a stuffer...I ain't holding my breath though. I won't complain been a good season. Hey, maybe next year I'll get a mulie & antelopetag(always something to look forward to when the season comes to an end):D! |
RE: Canadian Whitetails
Hi all
If you havent heard, rumour has it BC has broken their provincial record for typical MD at least twice this year. First a big buck from the okanagon and now a bigger one from the Peace. gross 212, net 208. Lots of other good bucks all over. |
RE: Canadian Whitetails
JD,
I just about fell off my chair looking at the first picture of your taxidermist's studio. I was admiring the great bucks on the wall then moved to the left a little more and OMG one of these things in not like the other!!! A GIRAFFE!! Crap I'm still laughing. The giraffe took me by complete suprise. Drew. |
RE: Canadian Whitetails
Just got this on email NT shot in Sask. Deer was shot in the Qu'applle valley north west of Regina this week, scorementionedwas 209NT. Not sure who did or why the art on the dude's face???? But not to shabby of a rack this bad boy grew, so thought I'd share.

RE: Canadian Whitetails
Skeeter...Baby & Momma are great! I decided to head out for a final morning whitetail hunt this sat. since my tag is still unfulfilled:):).I told you he's close to a 160 class. Wall mounter in my books!
Bigscrape...the room is pretty amazing, he has everything in there, the giraffe freaked me out the first time I saw it as well. My owl is ready this weekend so I'll show you guy's some pics next week. JDinAB |
RE: Canadian Whitetails
Good to hear on the home front, you getting any winks at night? Best of luck JD!!!!!!! I am also heading out Saturday. I kept the cape but no plans for a shoulder mount at least at this point. I guess am saving for the possibilty of a speed goat and mulie next year...not to mention whitetail maybe a bear rug. Heck who knows maybe I'll get a HUGEelk, found the perfect place for it....the stairs on the way up to the bedrooms..:D. LOL
Re: the taxi pics and giraffe. You know I used to think who would ever want to shoot a Zebra? I mean to me they alwaysseemed like a goofy looking horse. Well that was before I saw a Zebra pedestal mount at my taxi's place. They are gorgeous and this mount was truly awesome. I would never shoot a giraffe, rhino or elephant but I really like a number of the plains game from africa. It is on my list of places to hunt before I am done on this earth.ONEDAY!! I may even have a ZEBRA to mount..the wife told me no why in He(double hockey sticks) a stripped horse is adorning our living room...hehe;)! |
RE: Canadian Whitetails
LOL!! I have to admit I was never interested as well but after seeing one mounted, thay are truly beautiful. My wife actually commented on how nice it looked. One day I may head there as well but thats a long way off.

Hey guys Hiawatha from Chelan sent me this picture a few years ago... The shed if from Sas. Do you guys know anything about this shed antler? It was posted over in Realtree. Nevertheless....this buggar is a giant typical...count those tines and look at that length...not many on the planet of this caliber. ![]() |
RE: Canadian Whitetails

RE: Canadian Whitetails
Thanks JD, for all the pictures and advice you've shared with us this season! My season isn't over till the fat lady sings. I was getting desperatefor some venison so I wacked an antlerless one with my crossbow. Please don'tconsider me a trader.[&o]I still have plenty of time to fill my buck tag but it's getting much colder by Pa's standards. Our season opens back up the day after Christmas and goes until Jan 14th. Never say die!;)
|
RE: Canadian Whitetails
Mother of pearl "NOW THAT'S A WALL OF TINES!!!!". First I seen of it.
The NT I postedhas beenconfirmed - 245 NT Green Score, shot north of Leoville Saskatchewan by a local hunter. I heard of and am triing to get a picture of a huge Mulie shot just south of Saskatoon on the last day of rifle (Nov. 12th). It has been scored at a whooping 288 NT. I hear it may be at the SWF scoring day this sunday...so maybe I'll get a peek and a pic to share. Shed I am done. Bittersweet/disappointing end to an otherwise good season, as I encounter a wounded 5 that I had seen many times this season in the ML Zone. He apparently was the victim of a errand shot from a hunter. I assume they either didn't realize the land was posted or when the deer fled after the shot got out of dodge to avoid beening confronted and left the deer to suffer. I did what I felt was ethical as the deer couldn't flee even though it tried and thus all she wrote for 05'. He is a old/downslider (7-8 est. age), bruising body size with 145 rangerack..no heck but I wasn't about to allow him to suffer a minute longer and my guts were to wrenched to consider pushing on for the remainder of my last day to hunt.[:'(] I am hoping this winter to find the big boy I was chasing sheds, a typical 6x. As luck would have we spotted him hanging withthe cattle on Tuesday evening. He is a nice deer but I think he might still have room to grow as he appears younger. So lots of hope for next season and he certainly knows how to survive, suckers eating feed corn and oats with the beef:D! I think next year a small plot of fall rye might be in order;). Oh isn't it great to be already planning for the next go round . |
RE: Canadian Whitetails
Early...you ain't no trader, get em with what you have is what I say. Good job!
Skeeter, pics of those brutes would be great! Well done on the ethical portion of this years hunt, karma will find you one day:)I just bought my new hunting rig yesterday. 06 Tacoma with all the bells & whistles! Can't wait!! Will bw watching for the pics fellas. JDinAB |
RE: Canadian Whitetails
Good to hear Skeeter. You did the right thing. I hope to see your big 6x6 in a future post next fall. He sounds like a tank. I also hope u took pics of the 145 incher...would love to see the brusier.
Yeah that shed picture has always dazzled me. I have even wondered if it were real its so grossly huge for a typical. I was hoping you Sas guys had some info on it. It was supposidly a Sas shed. Have a good one guys my late archery opens tomorrow! Troy |
RE: Canadian Whitetails
Thanks boys for the words.
Shed I never took any field photos for a number of reasons. Picof his rack for yeah. No big mulies at rack measuring day. In fact not much showed that was big. 170 5x5 and 200 NT whitetails were the highlights. JD, congrats on the new wheels...enjoy bud. |
RE: Canadian Whitetails
My hunting pards old 4x4 from the same ML spot(another downslider).
|
RE: Canadian Whitetails
Skeeter![:-] That aint a bad deer my friend. I may have somenice mulies but no whites near even that size yet! Take me hunting if thats a small one for ya!
Congrats on the season, you made a good move by helping that buck.. BTW: my butcher found an arrowhead buried in the left hip of my small 4 point from Sask. He ran fine, must have been an old wound. Amazing how those animals can recover though. |
RE: Canadian Whitetails
Shed forgot to say best of luck in the late season!!!!!
agaucher, nodeer is ever badas long as your happy, but I didn't feel to great about the situation or harvest in this case. Very bittersweet moment. Nice try...lol. Cool on the BH found. One of the boys elk this fall had a BH in the neck from archery season a few weeks prior.I agreeanimals are truly amazing. JD, where abouts are you planning to hunt in Sask next fall?? Still nothing in way of photos on the mulie's. I am close to finishing the Euro Mount on the Moose. This was my first attempt on these guys. Just need tofigure out if I want it wall plaqued orif I'll just set it up as is. Attached a pic after the bleach phases. PS:Seasons greetings to you all!!!!!!! ![]() |
