What's up JD? Like I mentioned to you before I'll be in the Bow Zone the second week of Nov. At this time is it stillconsidered pre rut? Here in Pa. the rut is in full swing at this time. Will they be chasing or tending? I could ask my outfitter this kind of stuff but I think everyone enjoysthis info.:)

Heres a canadian deer, not a monster but its my 1st bowkill so I wasn't gonna let him walk. Took him yesterday morning at 20yrds.
Hey wilderness chick, I'm down south in T.O. but I took this guy only15min north of you, a friends farm on Oro Line 12.

Hey early...second week in Nov is prime time (usually) I say that because the weather plays into it alot up here. I'm sure you will be fine but I've seen it slow without the cold temps. and we have a thing up here called chinooks that can warm up pretty good. But I would say you want to be here mid Nov. anyways. Just make sure you are ready for the cold weather[&:]I'm sure you'll have a blast and see a fair amount of big bucks, just don't shoot the first one you see as patience is the key to a really good deer. Let us know how your hunt went.
I'll be taking holidays then for my deer hunt as well.

Here's a picture from this weekends hunt, too warm for deer (+22c) but good weather for pheasants!

I was just thinking, I wear tee shirts, shorts and sandles year round where I live. When I jump on the plane in San Antonio Nov. 12th it's most likely going to 65-75 degrees F, landing in Edmonton later in the day I think there will be a big problem![&:]

Do ya think a pair of hunting boots with 1000 gram thinsulate will be ok for everyday/camp use?

Sorry JD, this should have come before my last post but thanks again for the info. You'r my "man in Washington". I did'nt know you have good Pheasant hunting in Alberta. Seems like you've got it all up north! Those are some great photos too.

Nice pics JD. Got love them little white meat winged devils!!

DoubleA, you'll be spending the bulk of your days outdoors with your pac boots, so really any waterproof/semi insulated boots will work for camp use. I doubt you'll have to trudge to far to use the facilities...if you know what I mean! A spare set that isn't as warm wouldn't hurt just encase it is warmer out though...so if your buying new boots for this trip 800-1000 would be more than adequate. I myself wear 600-800 just wear the appropriate sock weights for the conditions I hunt in...then again it don't really feel cold to me till she dips in the -20's..lol! BTW we don't make you get off the plane in the snow...so just make sure you have access to a jacket, etc when you get your gear. Jeans, long sleeve shirt, socks and shoes are advised though! Also, we have heat in our vehicles now..so you'll be ok for the ride from the plane to camp as well:D!

Earlyin you should be right in the mix. IMOone of thebest times around the rut is the chase phase, those last few days were the smell is in the air but them does just aren't willing to let him get some...can be down right blazing. The area you are hunting in a word is AWESOME, so enjoy the ride!

Getting near, I wish you both and all the other hunters the best on your hunts! Make sure to updateus on the events!

Skeeter pretty much sumed it up...as for hunting up here it is paradise, we have anything you could possibly want within an hour or two from the big cities. I have never done a guided hunt myself but I'm sure you will have excellent facilities that your clothing shouldn't be an issue in camp. On the stand however, be prepared for anything!
By the way, if you guy's don't mind me asking, what does a guided hunt cost you guy's? and for how long? Thx!!

p.s. any other questions just keep asking, I'll try my best to answer them all. Here's my trophy wall so far.

JD, Is a piece of that whitetail's ear missing?

JD IN ALBERTA 10-18-2005 04:23 PM

RE: Canadian Whitetails

Actually he had both ears torn up pretty good. I told the taxidermist not to fix them as it gave him character...they get it from fighting with other bucks and get their ears caught between antlers. The really cool thing about this buck was the taxidermist found the tip of another deers antler embedded in his skull just above his eyes under the skin, he said he's only seen that once before. He was a tough deer so that's why he's on my wall:) Good observation!!

JD, great story about ole "split ears". Best of luck adding to your "wall" this season.

Yeap them whitetail sure can be tough. Last 2 years I have taken bucks that were damaged as a result of the rut ritual. 2 years ago I shot a buck with a puncture wound to the stomach, badly bruised entire front end and yet he still came charging in to my rattling to give her another go! My last minute smokepole buck last fall was limping hard, basically 3 legged. Came to find out he had a broken left front shoulder, gouged left eyeand deeply bruised front end. Got love em, just liketimex "takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'!!!".

Hi JD, those are a couple of nice deer. Thanks for the pics. As far as my hunt with Primitive, it's $4300.00 for six days. Also Jeff's the real deal from everyone I've spoken to! This will be my dream hunt!!!!!

JD, I truly enjoyed your response to my last boot question. It cracked me up! :DYesterday I was able to load a few rounds and fire them down range and was pleased. Time is just passing so quickly and I have things around that need tending to but I can always take a break to do some shooting.

Thank you for posting the deer pics, yes by leaving that whitetail "as is" it does add characature and will remind you of that hunt for your lifetime I am sure.

As far as my hunt goes I bought 3 spots @ $4000.00 each plus GST.The hunt is 6 days and is on a 12,000 privateacres. With it all said and done the venison, if we all take a deer will be appx $170 US lb.:)

Not that I am counting but I leave in 24 days:)

Wow that's not cheap[:-]I really thank God I live up here and appreciate the beauty and abundance of animals near by. I really hope you guy's get the hunt of your dreams for that kind of money. I'm confident you will, as long as your outfitter is honest. I hopeyou will have some good stories and pictures. After all the Zaft buck came from the Edmonton bow zone and he's a pig!! Take lots of pictures and post them when you guy's get back! I love to look at any hunting pics.
Make sure you check the weather at environment Canada the day before you come up to give you an idea what to expect for the week.

If I can give you one tip it would be this. Depending on the stands/blinds you will be in, one sure way to keep your hands warm is get a hand warmer that wraps around your waist (like a fanny pack sort of) and put in a couple of those hot packs. After years of trying different glove combinations this works best for me, especially with the bow where big mitts are not really functional. You just need lite gloves and your hands will be toasty (as long as you have a bow holder). I would ask your guide if he can let you know exactly what your stands are like (heated or not) and if they have holders, hope this helps with your hunting experience. 2 years ago I hunted in -30C and last year it was +10C. You just never know what it will be like so get your clothing for all applications ready!!

Here's a few more to get your juices flowing!

JD, thanks for the great pictures, that's a nice buck in the back of that truck, even I would give him a ride in my pickup:D

I am a bit confused with the pic of the trucks in the desert....that is sand isnt it?[8D]

Unfortunately the big one in the truck is not mine, a buddy of mine sentthe picsto me last year, it was taken near where I hunt. It's a PIG!!! As for the last one of me in my stand,it was from last year as well, but the leaves have all changed colours already and are pretty much off the trees now. Hopefully I'll get some good pics this Sat.

JD, those are nice pictures but the ones with the snow are beautiful. There’s nothing like hunting deer with a fresh blanket of snow on the ground. It’s not hunting unless there’s snow and cold weather. I’m going to have to start brining my camera with me when hunting. Thanks for sharing those picture.

RE: Canadian Whitetails

JD what would you consider ideal temps. for rut activity and sitting all day? I know how important this is!

skeeter 7MM 10-20-2005 09:11 PM

RE: Canadian Whitetails

Early in, as you knowthe rut happens regardless of the weather so IMO anytime of the day could be good when it comes to this time frame. Ideal would be in -10c range things just seem to be happening when she staysa bitfrosty. Snow helps emensely as the does must work harder to eat and this usually means travel. Personally in deep transition areas the midday hours of 10-2 always seem to be the producer. If your more in the open the usual low light hours but with the rut you just never know. Honestly couldn'tcount how many times I have caught bucks moving in the wide open at high noon.

So be ready and the one thing you can't control is the weather so you'll just have to ride what you get. My partner took a 200 NT 4 years ago it was warm, no snow and just after noon when he caught the big boy and another nicebuck trailing a hot doe in the wide open. The only way to kill a big buck is be in the field, you just never know when the stars & planets will line up for you.

Good luck

JD IN ALBERTA 10-21-2005 09:24 AM

RE: Canadian Whitetails

early...I like it in the -5 to -15 for action as well as comfort. It's true as Skeeter says youcan see them anytime, but I have found that when the temp's drop they are really travelling alot more during all hours of the day. When it's warm the action usually seems to drop drastically. Also, too cold just makes for downright bad tree stand hunting, because no matter what you wear, you aren't moving so the chills set in after a few hours and that's not very fun. Blinds are way better in really cold conditions for me. But I definately agree...fresh snow is your best hunting partner! It makes them move, shows you recent travel patterns and is great for tracking a wounded animal.

This should get the blood pumping even though not a whitetail it is a saskatchewan buck that was harvested this fall with the bow. It has been rumored a big NT Mulie that would score very near the current archery world record (274 7/8) was taken not to far from where I live. Well here is the picture of that rumored buck. The score is not really known for sure but 274NT seems to be the number associated...either way it is a WOWer!!!

JD, received the picture today and adjusted accordingly..lol. I have no clue who the lucky archer is but it was harvested less than 1 hour from s'toon...at least so the story goes anyway. Your right he is a pig but looking at the picture this boy was taken right near the opener (start of sept.) and could almost bet the manholding onto this hawg knew heit before ever gripping the bow and tugging the string;). Mulies in this part of the country tend to show themselves during the summer, the key is getting on them early and not applying pressure. Obviously he accomplished this goal.

JD, did you say it was snowing in cowtown? It hasn't looked to good so far, cool today and calling for -9 tonight but they are also saying close to +20 by next tuesday. I can live with the temp but we have had lots of wind and weird ones at that for this time of year. That really screws me especially when you bank on Northern flows and the ever popular NW. Darn weatherman & mother naturedrive me crazy!! Oh well its hunting season so just maybe christmas will come early this year[8D]!

early in, no troubles. If you think of anything fire away. Once again have a great trip and best of luck.
