What's the best scope for your eyes. Not my eyes; a buddies eyes; your eyes. Or better yet, what scope for less money will meet your needs.
I'd go to a big box store and test out the scopes available for sighting, with your eyes, on a darkened area, as many yards away as possible.
When I was young, I went one year with open sites. The next year a 4X scope. When older, went to a 3X9 scope. The higher power wasn't for shooting, it was for telling how many points the rack was.

Cabelas, Bass Pro, Gander Mtn, Dick's Sporting Goods, even, to a lesser extent, Wally World, etc.
So, did you ever offer up a budget? There are many very good choices. Check out S.W.F.A. as they have some great closeouts on Sightron scopes right now.

well i took my marlin 336 out for the first time today i went to a rang that only went out to 20 yards its the only range close to me, and im not sure if it was because of me or my iron sights or the ammo that i was shooting ( monarch is the ammo) but it seemed to keep shooting to the right what do you guys think? i did hit bullseye a few time though, but im thinking i need a scope, im choosing between nikon prostaff 3-9x40 or the cabelas lever action 30/30 scope

Checkout the Redfield Revolution 2x7x33. Its nearly perfect for the 336. Built in Oregon by Leupold with a lifetime warranty. Can find them online for around $150. A "cant miss" (badda bomp boomp PISSH. Thank you, I'll be here all night! )

That's what I've got on my 336. I'm thinking about going to a 4x, if it'll be a little brighter/better eye relief. Cranked up to 7, I feel like I need a little more eye relief than I've got with the Nikon on my Marlin, it a good check weld. It's alright, but not perfect. Killed a bunch of deer with it. Usually keep it on 4x unless at range. Previously had a Bushnell Trophy - I think it's 1.75-4x32- that I moved to my muzzleloader. I think I like it a little better, but thought I wanted more magnification for the range (which is where I'm least satisfied with both)
