I'd get a fixed 4x. If you want super glass, look at the IOR / Valdata 4x. It's a great scope. Otherwise, Leupy FX II is a solid choice.

what about a nikon prostaff 3-9x40? what do think about?

I took the scope off my 336 with the intention of installing a ghost ring sight. eye sight could be a problem but the scope on a 30-30 just wasn't doing it for me. Most shots were 50 yds or closer. I would go with a 3x9 though just incase you need the extra magafiction for something. good luck

so are you saying it pointless to have scope on the gun? like even at 50-90 yards? my eye sight is fine with my glasses its just i have to have them or i cant see.

Leupold 4X FXII. Good luck.

I have scopes on all my rifles but that one. I hardly use it and when I do its for up close so its not worhless to put a scope on it I jsut didn't put one on mine.

IMO the Prostaff is a good solid scope. However, I think the Burris FFII has a lot better glass for not much more and it's the way I'd go.

What's your price range? I'm sure we could make some recommendations if we knew your price range.

Mine came (used) with a Bushnell 4x Sportview WP on it. I figured that I'd give it a chance...... and it works perfectly on that rifle. I haven't had to zero it in more than once
(I hope I didn't just jinx myself- we're going up to shoot next wknd lol..)

Your eyes

What's the best scope for your eyes. Not my eyes; a buddies eyes; your eyes. Or better yet, what scope for less money will meet your needs.

I'd go to a big box store and test out the scopes available for sighting, with your eyes, on a darkened area, as many yards away as possible.

When I was young, I went one year with open sites. The next year a 4X scope. When older, went to a 3X9 scope. The higher power wasn't for shooting, it was for telling how many points the rack was.

For a Marlin 336 I'd look for a shorter scope.
