all i know is i have simmons 3-9x40mmon my rifle now and it sucks. i cant hardly see anything at twilight. i was just thinking since the 4x12x50 is only $50 more than the 3x12x42why not, but i see yalls point about the size being a factor.

You could always get the 50 mm and try it out for yourself. I had purchased the 50 mm because it was going on my Sako and the lowest Optiloc rings could accommodate for a 52 mm ( = or -) so I went that route. Knowing what I know now I much prefer the 42 mm. Should have listed to stubblejumper in the first place. I just had to try it and see for myself. Good luck in your choice...

Your problem is the scope quality and not the lens size.In my opinion lens quality and coatings are much more important than lens diameter.

Just a little grin.Over the years I too have learned a great deal by trying things for myself.
