recurve ace, boy do i feel your pain. my father started a range in franfort ky in 1965 with the help of a few buddies. after 30 years of mowing, pruning, clearing and caring for the land, owned by the city, we were asked to leave the park because of safety issues. we asked what the safety issues were and were told it was unsafe for the bicycle club members. the biclycle club was in its infantcy, only one year old, but had laid claim to the park. they took credit for the trails, which we called shooting lanes. the park director was fully on the side of the bikers.

they got the wish they wanted. we moved off of the hill, and the bikers and tree huggers moved in. after about 2 months the bikers left, they couldnt maintain the trails enough to ride, and the place grew up, and they didnt want to make the efforts to keep the former shooting lanes open. funny how an organization thats is percieved as non essential and useless can have such an impact on a place. at present, the trails and shooting lanes are in such a state that the parks department cannot get a tractor with a bush hog onto the place to clean it up. good for them........

my suggestion is to get all of the statistics for safety, in the target archery arena, and the bowhunting arena.....gain as much information that you can. get your local game officer involved, and let him brief the powers in charge of the impact archery has on game control. get the biologist with your game department involved. they will have deer density numbers and herd growth forecasts that you can use. get as many of your club members together for a jam session to gain input and ideas from them.

after you get your information together, see if your city commisioners will hear your gripe, have it put on the docket for the commision meeting. go to the meeting in numbers, as many as will come. get the local bowhunters involved, because they are next.......more on that later...

only allow one person to speak on behalf of the archery club itself. this person needs to be a knowledgable person, with very good communications skills. if there are a few hotheads in your group, keep them in check. that is not the image you want the commision members to see.....

back to the earlier statement about the bowhunters being next, the frankfort city commision voted to ban the shooting of bows in the city. this was brought about by the county coroner who owned property that joined a city park, and he was killing great deer there every year, until the local bowhunters got wind of the honey hole, and started hunting there........he called in a favor to the mayor, and we got a vote of no shooting of bows in the city. this was a hunting related issue, but to eleminate the problem, they just banned the bows. it is illegal to discharge a firearm in the city limits of frankfort. the fellow who intitiated this whole thing, through his lack of knowledge, managed to keep the bowhunters out, while getting the very means of his ability to shoot his big deer eliminated as well.....he himself could not hunt as a result of his ignorance....

we showed up in mass, with all of our safety statistics, biologists, insurance agents, (for deer auto collision numbers) at the final hearing before the commision, it was painfully evident we had done our homework, or at least ammassed the people with the information, and fought a good, fair hard battle. we got the ruling tabled, which means it died with no permanant action taken.

get together, get involved. our beautiful archery range is now a huge tangled mess accessible to anyone, navagable by no one........i am truely sorry for your loss of your range, but with your efforts you may be able to retain it.

Recieved this from a local station that did a brief news story on the range.

Charlie Shoemaker of Metroparks assures me there is no plan whatsoever for a
frisbee golf.

the range is still not being used! [:' (][:' (][:' (]golf or walking trails or YUK horse trails?
a beautiful range gone? maybe the horse people are behind this?
I still question how an old fiberglass arrow can cause the closure of this range. Must be more to the story somewhere?
Anyone how has emailed or called? What did you hear?
