I know what you are saying. I have hunted around Sterling where my friends live. A good season for them is seeing 5 deer and getting 1. Kind of like hunting the Adirondacks or Vermont. And every year they lose another 50 acres to a housing development.
It will take you a couple of years to learn some new land in NY, but in the long run you will not regret it. Check out WMU 7R. Lots of state land and out of state hunters pretty much get a doe permit every year. 3 hour drive from Albany.

Thanks Newtown, that helps. I am origianlly from Worcester, MA, very close to Sterling so I know the area very well. Seeing 5 deer and getting one buck is a great season for gunners. And Sterling is a decent area for deer, but limited public land.
Thanks again.
