RE: Its a great day in PA
We certainly have come a long, sad way from a PGC that served the sportsmen, and the now alien concept of deer and trees coexisting peacefully together! Read it carefully. It has more common sense than anything I've read from the PGC in over a decade.

RE: Its a great day in PA
I'm just throwing this out there lets not all start with the bold text stomping and yelling.
Has it occurred that after twenty years that "regeneration" might have failed? Maybe what started as plenty of new growth has turned to scrub maple with a scattering of popular? I'm just asking! A couple of follow up pictures at maybe 5 years 10 years and present would be quite convincing. |
RE: Its a great day in PA
The article states that only cuts that were at least 5 years old ,so the saplings were already beyond the reach of the deer.

RE: Its a great day in PA
Does it say any where in that story the size of the clear cuts, I do believe that when areas are cut today they are not any where near as large as in the past.
And any one that knows anything about forestry knows that this 1 % plan that the state is using is a foolish waste of the timber resources we have and certainly won't help wildlife in any way.Private land owners are select cutting at 2 to 3 times what the state is. Our small game populations are at an all time low,and pole timber is a big factor in why we've had the decline. |

RE: Its a great day in PA
Because many faster growing trees reach harvest size far before one hundred years. And after the first twenty years most trees besides Oak provide little or no benefits for wildlife.
|
RE: Its a great day in PA
The vast majority of SFL and SGL are areas with poor soils and slow growth rates which is why they use the 1% average harvest rate.

RE: Its a great day in PA
I notice that we STILL are getting only part of that article.
Why, pray tell, isn't he rest of it there? |
