Its a great day in PA
Sunny and warm, just might be a great afternoon for a little shed hunting.
Are any of you going to spend some time in the great outdoors today? I am and I don't have any thing to worry about because. Its spring time so breeding rates are of no concern. ![]() I haven't ever seen a mountian lion this time of year. ![]() I don't live in 2F or 2G ![]() Get out and Have a great day,Jim |

RE: Its a great day in PA
I do happen to know where a 2.5 year old buck seems to have spent the winter, and on my way to work on Monday I saw what I believe was the same deer minus his horns. I might take an hour or two and have a look. Really looking forward to next wkd if the weather holds up for some more serious shed hunting up north, and looking around for some turkeys, maybe stop and say hello to the fish warden and get a handle on the preseaon trout stocking. C'mon spring!

RE: Its a great day in PA
Just got back from a little trip to the woods and one of my trout streams. Made myself a coffee and checked in to see what was new on the forum. I see Jim added a new topic fitting to what I just did today.I watched the weather last night, even though it was to be quite chilly last night,I still planned to go out early this morning. Got up at 6:00am and arrived at the top of ridge to listen for what I think is the most exciting sound that spring can offer. The gobble from the "ol boss tom." Last nights chill made the birds roost low in the hollows. The first gobble didn't pierce the morning silence until 8:37am. But it was worth the wait!:) Things picked up an hour later. Heard 7 to 8 total for the morning.:) Left the mountain a little before ten. Stopped and took a walk along the designated delayed harvest section on a local stream. Wanted to see if or any changes, that might have been made from high winter waters or ice jams. They will be stocking this section next week.:) So here is my contribution to Jim's topic.I don't know about anyone else, but I just had a great dayin Pa.:DNow it's time to go downstairs and hit the tying bench to get ready for some early trout fishing on the delayed harvest and for the upcoming spring Steelhead trips.;)[/align]

I have been in the woods at least 5 days a week for the past two months, cutting browse and firewood. The warm weather is nice but it will turn my trails to mud and I'll have to stop hauling wood until things dry up. Haven't seen any buck or found any sheds ,but 4 doe are hitting the browse.

RE: Its a great day in PA
I was burning the grass and corn stalks in the field with my son. Planted some turnips last year and the deer won't even taste them. Some of the soybeans are still being eaten by the deer and the squirrels are eating the beans off.
Wish the snow would melt in N.Y., so i can start working in the fields up there. Seeing at least thirty some turkey going through the corn field in the morning and evening, haven't seen a bearded one yet. Deer are still moving at night, seems to be at least as many as last year, if not more. That's what happens when everything around you is posted and you don't shoot every deer you see. It's really a shame that doe tags are issued, supposedly by the number of deer in a WMU, then most of these tags are used on SGL and other areas open to hunting. Until they issue tagsseperately for public or private land, those that hunt public land will always have less to see and enjoy. |

Grumbler. ;)
My cousin's kid called last night, wants to know when I'm coming up to camp so's I can do some repair work on his Rem.243. He also mentioned they're getting ready to work-up some of my ground and plant food plots. Told him to hold hishorses until I get up there. Don't really want anything done where he said they were fixin' to start. It's already starting to produce some nice clover there, just from me keeping it mowed a few times per year, over the past several years. Used to be nothing but goldenrods and briars in those open patches of old pasture in amongst the thorn trees and brush. Dang hoofties, anyway. |

This is America you have the right to bitch and whine like a candy less child ontrick or treat night, but you also have the right to leave, go some where that the deer breed like rabbits and trees regenerate like in the rain forest some where that those wary button bucks are trophies of a life time. Your not getting any younger so why live in a place you despise surrounded by people that nothing in common with your train of thought. ![]() |
RE: Its a great day in PA
Friday was nice here in Crawford county, sunny and warm. So in the afternoon I took my wife ,daughter and puppy to a friends farm to do some shed hunting.
Well I found three and my daughter found a big buck dead,it looks to be the brother of this buck. I found the right side of this buck with a piece of skull attached so it appears he too is dead. This is a game cam picture from 11-07. He was a great buck. ![]() |

So I now know what theGreat Grumblerhad to say about a response I made to Coalcracker's comments on "food plots".Poor devilreally can'tresist the urge to spew, apparently? [8D] Also just realized that if I scroll down below the response feature, the ignore feature doesn't work. |
RE: Its a great day in PA
You must have me confused with someone else ,since I never said anything about hating anything about PA. Or, was this another of your nonsense posts, in an attempt to gain some attention and generate another argument?
That was really a nice buck in your pic. It's really a shame if two bucks of that quality went to waste. |

Someone might also wanna tell Denny that most emotionally mature"adults" don't need to use an "ignore" feature to prevent their self from being worked up into a froth over people expressing their anti-treehugger opinions, and distaste for a failed deer plan.;) LMAO!

RE: Its a great day in PA
ORIGINAL: bluebird2 Do you have a pic of the rack of the buck your daughter found? The mass on the single horn is just incredible. I am guessing the deer that the skull came from died in August, because the end of the horns were eaten away like they might have been in velvet, also because of the very rough texture of the horns them selves. They have very sharp little knobs that don't appear to have been rubbed. But really who knows. ![]() ![]() |
RE: Its a great day in PA
Neat bucks Jim! It's a shame they went the way they did but hopefully their genes still roam your woods:D
The Il trip was a great time in spite of some really crazy weather. We intended to call yotes each morning but heavy rains simply made the cabin a whole lot more attractive. Walked a good bit of bedding cover after the rains let up and found tons of sign but not one shed. Unusual for that area and a bit baffling because we saw plenty of deer that appeared to be shed bucks. The deer absolutely mauled our turnips over the winter. The strips of small craters where the turnips used to be are the only sign left there. Sunday brought winds that got up to 50 mph and never seemed to go below 30 mph. Walked two properties we are considering leasing for 2010 and found ourselves wishing we didnt have to wait another year for them to be available. We saw hundreds of deer over the weekend. Drove home yesterday and saw hundreds more from the interstate. The sightings got numerous as we came through eastern Ohio on 70 as the day got long and hit the PA line in time for the last 15 minutes of light. Can't speak for all of 2A but the I-70 corridor is just teeming with deer. Our light was gone by quickly as we came into PA but we managed to see a dozen plus groups of deer numbering as few a s 2-3 to a dozen or more. I guess that a few deer survived down there after all;) |
RE: Its a great day in PA
Its a shame the weather got so bad. The coyotes need some thinning around here too.
I planted turnips a couple of years ago and the deer loved them, yet I've read where others say they don't touch them. Mine ate the foliage in the fall and dug the turnips up all winter long.:) No sheds is really surprising,do you think some one might of beat you to them? |
RE: Its a great day in PA
No sheds is really surprising,do you think some one might of beat you to them? The landowner and family hadn't been out there yet but we did see quad tracks on one lane that could only be explained as tresspassers.[:@] |
