I have walked miles and miles of transect lines on both public and prinately managed property doing browse impact surveys for the past several years.I'm very well trained on recognizing the effects of browsing and on identifying what the deer are specifically browsing on and what they aren't.My brother's property is overbrowsed,plain and simple.My brother's property is surrounded by several hundred acres of private land.Some has very restricted access and some has no access because the land is owned by anti-hunters.On an average year,I bet there's less than 3 deer taken from the 500 acres or so that surrounds his property.Five years ago,it was nothing to count well over a hundred deer in the fields in front of his house once the corn got cut.

That is a fine example of just how disingenuous many PGC supporters really are. Citing a situation where deer densities are determined by anti-hunters controlling the harvest, to justify statewide HR is ridiculous and borders on dishonest. That situation does not represent what was occurring on the vast majority of public and private land prior to 2000.

America is a great place because of private property rights,this I strongly support. If your piece of land does not support the number of deer you would like you have a couple of choices,you can improve your land as to attract more deer or buy a larger piece of land so that you can better manage deer numbers. Most of my neighbors own less than an acre,and they hate deer. |

If you would have been paying attention you would have noted that my concern is about statewide deer management and it's long term effects on the herd , the habitat and the future of hunting. I'm doing all that I can to attract deer to our property, but there isn't a lot I can do when there is an unlimited food supply in our area.

No , I claimed he was full of horse puckey because he claimed the multiflora was browsed to within 10" of the ground. Even during the worst winter in 50 years when we had a lot more deer than we do now, the multiflora rose around Mehoopany was not over browsed.
In no way was I trying to justify statewide herd reductions because the the woods behind my brother's house. |
