RE: Its a great day in PA
ORIGINAL: bluebird2 But we all know that if the deer created similar habitat by over browsing a clearcut and creating an open meadow ,it would be declared an ecological disaster which would require killing more deer. If you ever see where deer created better habitatfor themselves, small gameor other big game species you be sure to let us know. The whole world is waiting to see such a miracle of nature. The habitat work that was done, and will continue being done in the future,on these projects will also benefit the deer foryears to come into the future, as well. Nowmaybe you cango ahead and tell us why are you so obnoxiously negative about everything good for the future of wildlife and hunting? R.S. Bodenhorn |

I too want to commend Sproulman for making an attempt to see what he can learn. Even though we have disagreed on some things, (well ok many things), I still find him to be an honorable person willing to at least be fair in his evaluations of the way he sees things. I just hope he goes with the objectively to perhaps see things with both an open eye and open mind toward the thought that perhaps those old ideals he holds might not be entirely correct. I have seen that he is not entirely wrong, about some things, and I hope he isn’t too closed minded to see there is always more to learn about the inter-actions of wildlife, habitat and nature; even for us old dogs. Bodenhorn I will, right after you tell us why you keep misleading and deceiving hunters about the carrying capacity of the habitat in 2G and the reason for the huge decrease in the herd. It would be hard to have a more negative view of the carrying capacity of the habitat in 2G than you have. |
RE: Its a great day in PA
A failed clearcut surrounded by mature forest stands adds to the diversity of the habitat and creates grazing areas for elk and deer just like the forest openings created by the PGC and RMEF. |

BTB, if a 10 acre clearcut is seeded in red oak, but browsing prevents the regeneration, tell us...What will take hold in that open clearcut?
Regeneration sometimes fails after harvest cut-ting on the Allegheny Plateau of Pennsylvania as aresult of excessive deer browsing, (Marquis 1975a,Jordan 1967, Shafer and others 1961, Grisez 1957,Bennett 1957, Frontz 1930). Most such failurescan be avoided by limiting cutting to stands thatcontain abundant advance seedlings, or by usingshelterwood techniques (Marquis and others1975). But regardless of the care used in prescrib-ing cuts, there continue to be a few regenerationfailures. Once regeneration fails, ecological changes oc-cur that make it increasingly difficult to establishtree seedlings. Any viable seed buried in the forestfloor generally germinates during the first 3 or 4years after cutting (Marquis 1975b). Thereafter, seed sources become limiting to further seedlingestablishment. Herbaceous vegetation often be-comes established and some kinds of herbs can in-terfere with the growth and development of anyseedlings present (Horsley 1977a, 1977b). |

Wont exactly be walking but My son and I are headed out to put some lime down on a new food plot we cleared a couple weeks ago.
