RE: Its a great day in PA
In my area the deer and turkeys seem to have faired out alright i have seen no winter kills
Doing a clear cut in 20 acre wood to dig a basement and build a house in mehoopany area and i see they have all underbrush ate down to about 10 inches from ground thorns saplings all of it |
RE: Its a great day in PA
IMHO you are full of horsepuckey to quote RSB, the deer in the area around Mehoopany have so much food they have no reason to over browse and area to the degree you claim. i worked that area for 28 years and never saw any where close to the degree of over browsing you are claiming.

No winter kills here either. If all goes well, I'm headed to camp in 2F next week. I'm gonna try to walka couple of yarding areas I know of up there and see whats up. From what reports I got, We didnt have it nearly as tough as 2G but we did have 24-36 inches of crusty snow for a good while up there.

RE: Its a great day in PA
deer in 2g did fine thru winter.not 1 report of dead deer,SO FAR.
this was worst i have seen in years on ice hard as rock. |
RE: Its a great day in PA
BB,I lived within a few milesof Mehoopany for 20 years.I can show you overbrowsed areas. My brother lives within 15 minutes of Mehoopanyand his property is a poster child for overbrowsing, despite the fact that a tornado ravaged most of it about 8 years ago or so.That area use to be loaded with deer and still is in many areas. It shouildn't surprise anyone that overbrowsing could occur.I have a buddy that owns alot of land in Susquehanna county, just outside of Montrose. That area is fragmented agriculture property and it's more overbrowsed than 2G.My buddy's property in Montrose has worse habitat than any place where I hunt in 2G.

RE: Its a great day in PA
I strongly disagree with your opinion of the habitat in those areas. While you may be able to find areas of over browsing ,the carrying capacity of the habitat is still much higher than the current DDs in those areas. You apparently are claiming that the habitat is controlling the herd ,when in fact it is harvests that exceeded recruitment that reduced the herd. If the habitat was as bad as you and others claim ,multiflora rose would be over taking the abandoned fields in those areas.

RE: Its a great day in PA
That rose is like a plague whereI hunt in 2B.
You have to cut a travel corridor to your stand sites. There is no walking around freely at will. The deer go through it like it isn't there, and eat the leaves and stems as they go. |

RE: Its a great day in PA
did you know the DCNR has orders out to cut down a lot of these plants in woods of wmu2g.
a lot of these have berries on them too for rabbits/grouse/turkeys and other birds. rabbits eat bark off them too at times. if they see them, they will be cut down |
