1974 - Muzzleloader deer license created; the fee is $3.25.
1974 - First muzzleloader deer season; 65 deer, including four bucks, were taken. The season was held for three days on 37 state game lands. http://www.pgc.state.pa.us/pgc/cwp/view.asp?a=458&q=154066 |
RE: PA Regulations??
ORIGINAL: Cornelius08 I dont think they belong period. Slow, fast or medium implementation. They arent bows. We definately don't need added harvest. Dont need LOSS of real bowhunters voice in legislation effecting bowhunters as has happened in ohio, with crossgun toters now the majority of archery season participantsout there. It also creates a rift among sportsmen that lingers on and on. Its been many years since Ohio implemented them, and still there is great resentment about the issue still today among many ohio archers. As for anyone who saysthat we just don't want them in the woods... Correct me if Im mistaken, but a man carrying a bow takes up just as much space as one carrying a crossgun. Noone is preventing him from filling that space out there in the autumn woods NOWother than himself. If one would rather sit on the sofa instead of in the woods because crossbows arent legal, then no, they do NOT deserve an additional 6 weeks afield in the nicest time of year. Put in the time and dedication and do it the right way. Dont beg for provisions to be made for cheap shortcuts. I also disagree with the inital onslaught of xgun buyers then decline. Exactly the opposite occurred in ohio. Long gradual increase. Many will run out at first, then after the shock has worn off and some of the unacceptance wanes, slowly others follow suit in picking them up. Also more and more get "experience" with them by hearing stories from friends using them... Maybe Shooting abuddies crossgun....Lots of more affordable "used" xbowsfor first time buyers become commonplace..etc. I don't think we would come close to seeing the full extent of how many would pick up the weapon until at least 8-10 years or so in. that should be enough.;) let the recurve and compound hunters have their season as it is now.;) |
RE: PA Regulations??
ORIGINAL: bluebird2 not denigrating gun hunters i am one but they have same opps to go out in archery how can they complain this is my point. i dont hate crossbow, i hate ALL NEW HUNTERS IT MAY BRING IN EARLY ARCHERY. heck, the woods here is STINKY now with archery hunters i see now, add 5 more to my area, another year i dont see a a deer ,let alone a buck.spooked buck in archery is hard to pattern. i am not greedy,i think a truly DISABLED should be able to use one in early archery, hey, it gives them a chance but think what chance they will have if a lot of new hunters hit the woods . what is all this new killing going to do to our deer that are left. is PGC going to worry about that, i doubt it. |
RE: PA Regulations??
i agree sroul it may bring alot of new hunters in the early ses atleast for awhile not good
i hunt all private land that i control who hunts so i do forget the impacts i just saw it as a advantage for me but i can do without i have killed many deer with a bow its to bad its most likely to late for anyone to do anything unless people call their reps for their areas and such but that rarely does anything either |

RE: PA Regulations??
shouldnt everyone be allowed to hunt deer in the warm month and during the first rut without having to learn how to hunt with a particular weapon? if you want to hunt warm weather and during the rut,you must learn how to shoot a bow? sounds prejudice and actually discriminating to other hunters. warm weather rut hunting is not a private atleast shouldnt be a private club just for bow hunters. we all pay for a license and should be able to hunt the rut and warm weather with a weapon of choice. how about we switch gun season to october and archery to november and dec? you still got the second rut to hunt and will be more challenging to the professional rack hunters. cry a river they would. i am all for crossbow early season. sign me up and i will see you all in the woods early deer season.

RE: PA Regulations??
pedro we acually pay extra for the private club i think its 15 and a gen license is 20 i think
i think gun hunters would see less deer if they got the early time to warm everyone would sit on there butts all day and no deer would move |

ALSO we did not see ANY tracks in snow at locations the rabbits were killed.. what animal would kill a rabbit and not leave tracks. ![]() i always tell truth, sproul is no fibber.;) |

RE: PA Regulations??
ORIGINAL: bluebird2 i always tell truth, sproul is no fibber. in my yard, 8 were killed from dec/mar last year. rest were killed where we walk our dogs on privateland. this area is used by my friends too train their BEAGLES,its nice to have a area that you dont have to drive 30 miles to find a rabbit to train your dogs . its hard for litter of 5 rabbits to make it each year. out of 5 rabbits in litter, i would guess maybe 1 or 2 make it,rest predators get. then after they get bigger, the nasty NIGHT STALKER does his damage. in summer, OWL usually eats other things, bugs, mice etc,but when WINTER comes, WATCH OUT HE IS RABBIT KILLER, FOR SURE. |
RE: PA Regulations??
If the rabbits you raise are only to train beagles, why do you care that the owls eat a few. If the owls ate that many one year it also means that they didn't hurt production the following year!!

Owls eat rabbits 365 days /year. How did all those rabbits survive,.If you have as many owls as you claim you have you shouldn't have any rabbits.

OWLS come to myarea in large numbers in feb. they MATE then. i had 8 OWLS in my area hooting last feb for 3 days. normally in summer i only here 1 or 2 hooting and i dont see any DEAD rabbits . but come WINTER AND feb ,bigtime killing happens on full grown rabbits. |
RE: PA Regulations??
Back a few pages it was suggested that the GC wants xbows so all these new archery hunters could shoot does regardless of an antlerless license. The problem with that theory is that an archery hunter still must purchase an antlerless license to take an anlerless deer.
Don't make the xbow argument into a PGC conspiracyin the ongoing deer wars. |
RE: PA Regulations??
Wow, something we can all agree on.:D
Sorry, but the simple fact is that the PGC is giving people crossbows as a crutch. I agree with BTB, if you want to hunt the best weather, best deer activity, etc., put the time and effort into it, pick up a compound or a recurve and experience what archery is really about. The PGC is grabbing at straws, trying to convince people to buy a license and get into the woods. What motive do they have other than that? |

Money...from archery stamps and better yet bribes by xbow manufacturers. It isn't about deer...only greenbacks this time.

ORIGINAL: livbucks Money...from archery stamps and better yet bribes by xbow manufacturers. It isn't about deer...only greenbacks this time. money yes. also many wantto kill a deer easy way, that is why IN-LINE sales went nuts, now crossbow sales will go nuts. i know hunters that have thousands in all these new things, more money than they would ever get in venison.:) they could buy 50 steers.:D i had one that got 30 grouse road hunting. he did it almost everyday. he was sitting at bar and said,I GOT ALL THESE GROUSE,I GOT A FREEZER FULL OF MEAT. i said, well, figuring a little, i guess with gas you paid to get these grouse, you could have bought 90 turkeys. he looked at me with funniest face you could imagine. he never looked at it that way.:D |

I've heard that Horton, for one has hosted a lot of VIP trophy hunts to promote the inclusion of the crossbow. The VIP's allegedly are politicians and appointed members of many various states and agencies but lets face it, with 900,000 hunters, PA is the big prize. It would also be a very big first domino for the industry to topple. Why else would the commisioners vote it in while admitting that they haven't studied the magnitude of the likely effects? |

Politicians get the bribes in the form of junkets and bennies, then they pressure the commissioners.

RE: PA Regulations??
BTB, my Beloved XBow state is PA, pay taxes, own ground, banned compounds on my ground because of your org. in 2008! I just happen to live in Ohio which made me a beleiver quicker. Easier to learn because of stock. Didn't have to worry about my shoulder coming out when pulling string. Was able to re-introduce 3 older fellows who had quit bow hunting, and get them rengaged in the sport. was able to introduce my daughter who does not have the arm strength to pull a bow back to the stringed hunt.
Every time i pay to play in PA, I earn the right to the woods, it's obvious most of your efforts in this issue have fallen on deaf ears! Maybe my way, spreading around the cha-ching get's the PAPGC's ears better than what you call a sportsman organization??? Money is what they will hear, coins clinking, not these forums, not those supposed public meetings, MONEY TALKS and BS Walks. That is why Xbow is in the state(s) I will be hunting! Maybe you guys ought to purchase more politicians like the Xbow lobby did, you might find the reality of the PAPGC is not hunters welfare, but their own pockets and paid for agendas! |
RE: PA Regulations??
Yep,they're definately easier to use. That's why most bowhunters don't want them in the general archery season.
|
RE: PA Regulations??
If you or your friends have a legitimate physical problem pulling a bow, the crossbow has been an option for you for many years. Just get it signed off by your doc and you're good to go.:D "Easier tolearn because of stock" is the type of lame thinking that has prompted this controversy If you're not disabled, man up and hunt with a real bow like the rest of us ![]() |
RE: PA Regulations??
Its not that I'm for them ,butI don't see the point in fighting over how we kill the deer that we are allowedkill.
The number of tags and antler restrictions arethe onlythings that have any effect on the number of deer killed. Dumb dear is the only oneI know of that didn't have ample opportunities in the existing seasons to kill an antler less deer. AR"s do keep some from filling their back tags, but if they won't or can't put the time in now to be successful I don't see them putting up another grand to kill one with a Xbow. Of course I hunt on a private deer farm so these laws will have no effect on me.;) |
RE: PA Regulations??
I think it all boils down to principle and the traditions we as bowhunters in this state have built. It'll be a shame when the day comes that more people are toting a xbow into the woods instead of a compound or recurve.
If you have medical problems that prohibit you from using a tradition bow or compound, then yes, I have no issues with crossbows. But for the people that are perfectly capable of pulling a bow back but would rather use a crossbow, you're just plain lazy in my book. |
RE: PA Regulations??
What it boils down to is,bowhunters ahve fought hard to be able to hunt the rut.If too many pre-rut bucks are harvested,we could very well lose the privelage of hunting the rut.Adding crossbows to the general archery season could potentially impact the pre-rut buck kill.On top of that,if you're too lazy to become proficient with a regular bow, just use a rifle.
|
RE: PA Regulations??
I think you guys might be onto some thing for the first yearor so but I think using your own logic I don't see these guys sticking around long once they find out that you can't just climb an oak tree and expect to shoot a deer. They are not the driven.
The one's that are serious ones will soon find that lugging that cumbersome heave X bow is not that much fun and will buy a compound ,and the rest will do what many do now, they will bitch and whine that there are no deer. Honestly I think your giving the lazy, back at camp by ten bunch to much credit, they can't kill deer now and they won't be able to with a X bow. ![]() |
RE: PA Regulations??
You may be right Jim.
I never liked the ideas of full inclusion for crossbows. However,I was trying to keep an open mind up until fairly recently.I'm on a deer managamentcommitteefor a private residential community in Clearfield county. This past year we had approximately 200 bowhunters hunting this property.About 30 of those guys are using crossbows because they have disabled permits.Several of these guys I know personally and they're far from disabled. In any event, the vast majorities of issues we've had involved the guys using the crossbows. So far,4 crossbow bolts have been found in people's yards that were shot from the road. The vast majority of the roadhunting compalints we get areabout guys using crossbows. |
RE: PA Regulations??
Slobs are slobs PA has more than our share. Make the punishment a deterrent and you will see the crime stop.
If you are caught shooting from your car then take the car and the weapon , if they want the car back make the fine an even thousand dollars, cash on delivery,no easy payment plans.[:-] I'll bet you bust two maybe three and word will get out and that will stop.Ma ma won't be happy to hear that the Ole man lost the family car.[:o] The P.G.C. pisses off masses of guys busting them for simple violations, I don't feel most guys leave their homes with a game law violation in mind ,yet major poaching cases are treated with kid gloves. Put the boots to deer poachers where it hurts. |
