Took my 15 year old out for his last youth deer weekend. We decided to pass on Saturday morning after hearing the pouring rain at 4:15. Took him out to breakfast instead, much more enjoyable.

The afternoon we did go out:

Kevin had to coach a soccer game at 2:00 that afternoon and after the game he decided he wanted to run out locallyfor a chance. We went where we saw an 8 pointer last year but didn't get a shot. We got in there, got the tree umbrellasetup, got our camo blind/wall setup and sat down. Then Kevin noticed the umbrella had velcro to open to setup closer tothe tree to keep us more dry. Great, up I went onto my knees and grabbed the velcro, just when I ripped it about 1 inchKevin said "Don't move, here comes a deer". Oh great I thought, he had to have heard that. Nope. Big deer came walking in and stopped! About 25 yards out, behind bushes. I am still up on my knees and Kevin got the gun up. Afterabout 10 hours or the deer standing there just looking around casually (ok, probably 1 minute), he started walking in.When he got almost broadside about 20 yards I told Kevin to take the shot when he had it. BOOM!! To my shock, the deer started running, uh oh I thought, didn't expect that. Well I also didn't expect Kevin's duck hunting reflexes to kick in. He pumped the gun and shot again, in mid-stride the deer collapsed!! Running shot tookit through both shoulders!!Kevin had his first deer, total hunt time: about 3 minutes. 140 lb "3 pt" One side completely snapped off, the other side looked like it wanted to be a drop tine with the beam snapped off. Skull underneath was cracked and antler moved. Sure didn't seem to bother him much, no visible sign of injury and FULL of fat inside.

Congrats to Kevin. Great story to go with your first deer.
