doug, you can walk up the gated road to the top and right up there on the left is the posted land.Or you can go up the road and make a left in rockton {forget road name} follow until you hit a field with a four wheeler trail. This is private open land.Follow trail into state forest. You'll be right above gated road.To the right is the posted land which bordered the flir. This is where the deer were hanging out when my sons saw them.

We saw plenty of deer on the wodded section of greenwood and did spot fields on the state forest.Take 322 like you're going into clearfield.Going down the mtn turn onto mt zion road.On the right you'll see posted land which runs up into the state forest.The other place with high deer concentrations during the flir.Two spots had very high dpsm which were both bordering posted land.That's too ironic to say it's not the posted land protecting the deer.Check the deer numbers in the flir in more remote areas or even along 322 and you'll see ranges from zippo to 12 dpsm.Those high numbers bordering posted land are no coincidence.{spellcheck please}
Anyway after turning on mt zion road take a right on the state forest road which loops around to 322.After passing the posted land on the right and left you'll see a few small fields with a larger one on the right.I haven't seen a deer in those fields spotting in two years.....nodda.You'll notice there's places which have been timbered and probably the main tree in there is red oak in various stages.Plenty of laurel throughout there but you should see a deer once in awhile on the edges or fields.

The PGC, (as well as many many other states) use one of several sound , scientific methods to estimate the deer herd. You can't count each one.
It doesn't take an idiot to see that the forests of PA have yet to rebound in many areas from the over browsing damage done by the excess deer of years past.
I found this paragraph interesting.

I like the part about the forests having yet to recover from the over browsing.

Have you ever given any thought as to how all that over browsing happened?
Maybe the over population of deer in the NC part of the state, back in the 60's and 70's?

Huh.........If the PGC does such a wonderful job, then how did the deer population get so out of whack back then?

Why didn't the PGC foresee the destruction of habitat and prevent it back then?

The PGCcreated the problem we have today.

Everyone knew there were too many deer inNC PA yet hunters were limited to one deer per year.

If the PGC would have issued more antlerless licenses in the 60's and 70's they could have prevented much of the overbrowsing.

The PGC is the reason for the overbrowsing because they did not want to waiver from tradition.

While many may like what the PGC does, they have to admit that it made big mistakes in the past.

Went several miles into the Sproul, below Renovo last winter. No surprise to me that deer are scarce in there. What would they ever find to eat to keep them therein good numbers?

Only deer I saw in the area while on that trip, were across the river andnot far belowthe Rt. 120 bridge.
finally,truth will set you free..
THANK YOU FOR TELLING TRUTH..

now, you got my respect, trust me, i did see a COUGAR,tail and all and many other friends of mine have also..
sadly, only way you will become believer, is to see one.i hope you do and can gain our respect on that also.

thanks ,sproul..............

Sproul, if it makes you feel any better, I too spent some time in the Sproul SF near Renovo and saw very little deer sign. Almost none to be exact. The point, though, is that the habitat there is so poor that the deer arent likely to be plentiful there for years to come. The Sproul is largely in the pole timber stage and pole timber constitutes the very worst kind of deerhabitat. After seeing the poor quality of that habitat, Icompletely baffles me that anyone would insist on continuing to hunt there.

Rich,I'll give you the name and number of the district forester for Moshannon state forest. There wasn't one concentration of deer in any area thatwas open woods.Every concentration of deer was near an area with a heavy mast crop or a clearcut. That FLIR proves that the habitat is the limiting factor where you'll find the most deer. That area had huge areas with 0 dpsm.the reason for that is because of thelack of quality food and cover in vast sections of that state forest.Posted lasck with limitedaccesscan concentrate the deer when there's alot of hunting pressure but it doesn't concentrate deer 4 months after hunting season.

douge, the only reason for fly over was to find deer and have them killed off by dcnr..
funny, they did not find deer they thought in clinton/potter/cameron,so they blamed weather and deer were HIDING,remember that one, ha..
not being smart to you, only remember motive of all this is too remove the deereven tho its known that few are left.if any in some areas...

its money, jobs and deer are taking it right on nose..........

These people are nuts.

The PGC has done an excellent job of managing our herd. Overpopulation of deer ruined many of the good areas, now we have to work our way back.

This is a bunch of PETA people trying to halt hunting in PA.

I laugh when I read that the PGC made a big mistake years ago, but consider that Gary Alt's wife and children were threatened when he tried to save our sport, no wonder many watched and didn't react.

I still think most of the hunters need to spend more than a few hours in the woods.

I have never had better hunting for better quality deer since the changes were made and I hunt strictly public ground in easily accessible 4c territory. The parking lot is always empty because many are too busy here writing letters about their being no deer. Don't let attorney's get involved and ruin our sport in PA.

SPROULMAN

Deer hunting is much better money than forestry will ever be.

Cabela's came here and brought millions and millions to our state. Cutting a mature forest (which will help the deer) doesn't bring near that kind od money.

You need another theory. Think about it.
