Bear hunting in Maine
#1
Hi guys, I was planning on bear hunting this fall with a friend that lives in Maine, I live in Ohio.He was going to run the baits and do the scouting for me. Something has come up that will keep him out of the woods this fall. I only have a week to hunt in Maine, that's not enough time to drive up and do any baiting and have much luck. Does anyone have any suggestions? Sure would like to bring back a black bear from Maine. car

if your going to an area picked out by your buddy maybe have a local run some baits for you.you might be able for a fee to get someone to do it. your gonna want to start baits a month before and they have to be checked and maitained so maybe your buddy could find someone he trusts for you. another choice would be to hunt on your own looking for berry patches or try doing a honey burn to try to draw them in. get a coleman or similar burner and pour the honey in a pot or ive herd of people heating up rocks. usually ive found in maine they have off and on years with the berry growth. if its a bad year for berries i would go with a honey burn.

What part of the state are you going to? Do you own the land or your friend? If not the first thing you would need is permission to bait. Up here it is the law to obtain permission from the landowner to bait on first. If I only had a short time to bait in, I would find a group of apple trees. Both deer and bear as well as other wildlife love the apples. I would move out about 300 to 400 yards away from them and set out some sweets topped with somecherry pie filling. Bears love that cherry pie filling. You could set up around the apple trees but, it would depend on if bird season has opened up. If bird season is open alot of folks like to hunt birds around the apple trees. That is why I would recomend hunting away from them some. Also when setting up try to make sure the average wind direction will blow down towards the apple trees to get a bears attention. Good Luck to you.

i think you need to file and pay a fee to the timber company for use of a bait area. if your hunting by stalk i dont think you need it. my guide last time i was in maine told me its like 100$ for that permit. one reason why they hate to move hunters around much. they keep track of where the baits are because the outfitters fight over the better areas. if your going anyway check into all the options you have. make phone calls and get on the web. put the hunt into your hands. just remember on a good year i think its only like 40% success over bait. stalking on your own is gonna be much harder. maybe find a local outfitter and pay for use of one of there baits. some dont like to deal with hunters not staying in there camp but ive found there are some who will work with you.anyway check with the lumber company first then get to work making your hunt happen. if you have any other questions as far as what you need gear wise or any other suggestions i could wright a book so send me a private mail maybe i can help.

I am not sure about the Andover area, here you would need a $2.00 state permit plus a permit or land owner permission. The paper companies in this area is controlled by Webber for as far as the area you want I am not sure who is allowing it or not. The fee was around $65.00 for biating bear, if you know a few landowners they can give you a written permission to bait on their land for nothing. The state permit can be purchased when you perchase your hunting licsence. Good Luck to you.
