Im in Pike CO pa and a couple of months ago a Game warden came to speak at my fathers rotary meeting. He said that they know cougars are in pa but most likely they are released pets. About 6 or 7 years ago my dad and I were driving home and one crossed with about 3 little kits or whatever you call their young.
was that in pike co?i assume that was in june if she had kittens?

14 years ago PGC would deny you saw COUGAR,now they say they are released pets..
kind of brings back times when they said coyote was wild dog..
you have to laugh!!!

I would say just shoot one if you seen it. If I seen a ML while hunting,I am not taking a chance with him being the, ITis as much as scared of you as you are of IT. No way hozay. I am going to do a pre empitive strike on his a$$ to prevent that WMD from happening.
WMD= Wild Mountainlion Destruction :D
most of sighting i hear are almost all near or on dirt roads and almost all are in summer..dont ask me why, i dont know...

what i cant understand is why no tracks are found in snow,at least to my knowledge locally..
only reason i can say is they are not here in winter, question is, where do they go?
or could 1 or 2 cougars be moving constantly from state to state?
some said range is 500 miles..i dont know....

i do know this almost all sighting are from summer to archery season, then they stop reporting..

most of sighting are in most wilderness areas we have but some are not..
in summer sighting are in the wilderness areas,in winter most are near homes in rural areas...

so, cougars could be moving to food, if deer and game move. maybe they do also, i dont know....
Cougar tracks would be hard to find any time of the year really. You have to consider that they are not an abuntant as other wildlife species. So you are not going to have much evidence on them no matter what time of year. Cougars have a very large territory range. Larger than any species of mammal in PA. I don't think they will confine themselves to a 25 mile area even if the food is abundant. A female who just gave birth would do so though because the cubs are to small to follow long distances. There could be a chance that repeated sightings of a cougar in one area over several weeks or a month could be a mother that has cubs. When they are strong enough they will follow her on range and the sightings would drop. This could be one possibillity.

Yeah that was in Pike Co where I live. And if I remember correctly It was in the summer around June. Actually There is a town near me called panther, take a guess why it is named that. My dad said when he was younger people used to shoot them there.

I have to laugh everytime you say the PGC has ever denied the existence of coyotes. They've admitted that they've been in Pa since at least the 1930's.

Many people claim to see cougars in the winter time when snow is on the ground, yet they never find any tracks to confirm their existence.Last winter they even had a news crew in Pittsburgh where there was an alledged sighting. The tracks turned out to those of a house cat.A mountain lion does not have a home range of 500 miles.Young males will travel a considerable distance to establish a territory of their own but a female with kittens will not normally travel that far. You're not seeing the animals or their sign in the winter because they aren't there.

I have heard them say that also doug back in 79 when I first started to hunt. I remeber because it was my first rabbit hunt..My mentor while we was rabbit hunting told 2 wardens about sightings that he heard about and they said therewas nocoyotes in PA..

I heard it with my 2 little ears personally..

I just read that some cougars have a winter and summer home. (Just like humans)I also read without a consistant range of miles from few website that varied between 60 to 300 mile range.

Sproul maybe you should start mapping these sightings with month and year and see what you come up with...

Deputy wardens aren't spokesmen for the PGC.The PGC is on record for many decades admitting that we had coyotes in pa.

No one, including the PGC has ever denied the possibility of a released pet from time to time. They deny that there'sany evidence of a wild and breeding population. If even a very small fraction of the alleged sightings were legitimate, there would be evidence in the form of tracks, scat, kill sites or dead animals.None of that has ever been confirmed. All we have are bobcat pictures and pictures from other states that show up from time to time, claiming they're from Pa.

i did report the sighting to federal gov, they have site set upbut i cant seem to find it right now..
strange thing about it is,sighting seem to be in 1 area for say this summer, then i dont hear anything again from that area..
it gets all quiet..
like farmer in hyner,pa..he saw cougar many times and wco did investigate but could not find any info..yet farmer saw it many times and relatives too...this farmer i know and if he saw COUGAR it was COUGAR...
now, he does not see it anymore...
so, cats must be moving around, state to state, thats my guess...

i can only assume that they are moving around, here and there,i dont know...

douge, i only gave miles of 500 because someone on here that had info stated they have been known to travel that far..

how do you know they go 300 miles?

douge, you would not believe the number ofDCNR employees that have seen one..they tell me they have seen them but PGC seems to never see one...
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm,i wonder why?

DougE 07-05-2007 03:37 PM

RE: Possible Mt lion track

Iknow several DCNR employees,WCO'S,deputies, food and cover guys and forsters with the US forest service.None of them have ever claimed to see one.I WONDER WHY???Oh,that's right, they don't exist in Pa.

How bout that DCNR forester that claimed to see a mountain lion take down a buck last year in Pine creek?Didn't the investigation turn that mountain lion sightingin to a bobcat sighting?

RE: Possible Mt lion track

If you guys want to see a mountain lion in pa Go to montgomery and find a junk yard called B&C along route 15. accross the road is a yellow gate and alot of state land. Walk back past the gate for about 8 miles then head east. You will come up onto a farmright before the state landends bythe farm their is a den. You can say all you want but I know the family that has the farm and if they say there is a mountain lion there it is there. They tried to get the PGC to come down to check for themselves but they will not return their calls.
