"PA Gobbler" I can tell you from many years ofpast experience that the best way to get your dog trained on birds is to go to the Pheasant Preserves or what I lovingly call the "Chase The Chicken" farms.
The more birds you shoot over your dog the better offyou and it will be. There's no better way to pump up a bird dogthan to shoot lots of birds over it while it's young. Get your buddies together to cut the costs. You can also but Chuckers reasonably cheap and they taste great also. What breed do you have? ![]() |

Pagobbler,I really don't start hunting grouse until the second season but I'd enjoy the company of you and your dog anytime.I also agree with you about the private land issue. It's the landowners that own land and post it for themselves and their friends that won't allow more deer to be killed.Leases are also a problem, which the PGC has limited control over.Mostof the farmers in this area welcome hunters.
Sproulman,I asked before but you never answered. How much land do you own? |

doug, sorry ,i missed that. i am in with group now in our camp.we have about 97 acres.doug, i wish you could seen paper today, all smiles on opening of hiking trail in pine creek. top dcnr man was there. he said,WE SPENT 6.5 MILLION ON THIS TRAIL AND WE ARE HAPPY.if only they were that happy on trying to build habitat for deer.not 1 cent or pictures in paper on that. now, you know why i get mad.

I feel your frustration with the state of the habitat on state forest land.I'm not saying I like it or agree with it but the mission of state forest land is not to provide better habitat for deer. That's why the habitat on the SGL's in this area are so much better than the habitat on state forest land. The PGC does a great job providing a diverse habitat on the state game lands but they're a very small piece of the total land mass.

RE: DCNR SAYS 126 DEER PER MILE IN CLEARFIELD,PA.
sad day today, i had doe with 3 fawns on my land.stone trucks are fixing highways and drive to fast. they get paid by load and drive at high speeds.well, they hit the mother of these 3 fawns. they would not have hit her if they would not be speeding and traveling so close together. they travel 4 trucks real close in a row. if doe is not hit by first truck, next 3 get her.well, you can see i am mad.anyhow, coyotes have been chasing these 3 fawns for last 5 days.i will update on these 3 fawns but i am not hopeful they willmake it.friends are saying the coyote barking has been real bad.it always starts in july when little fawns are born. if you heard it,its terrible thing to hear. usually its male/female that corner the fawns, usually run together.

RE: DCNR SAYS 126 DEER PER MILE IN CLEARFIELD,PA.
ORIGINAL: DougE I live near and hunt those units all the time. The first thing you have to realize is that two of those units averaged out to 10 dpsm and the unit with the big concentration of deer averaged out to 16 dpsm. The habitat in that area is terrible with the exception of a few small areas and one big area that was ravaged by a tornado in 1985.Most of the deer were concentrated in those areas. You can walk and hunt for days in that area and never see a deer or cut a track because there's nothing for them to eat.Find an areas with food and cover and you'll still find decent concentrations of deer. It's actually a very easy area to hunt because you can key in on a few good areas with plenty of deer. Most hunters chose to whine and complain about no deer in this area but as you can see from the pictures, there's still plenty. Also, non of these area are way back in.The concentration of 126 dpsm,is very close to rt 322. I'm not sure what you're getting at.Are you saying DCNR is not telling the truth and that these pictures don't really show that many deer?hunters havebeen asking for a more accurate deer count for years and no that they spend thousands of dollars to get an exact count, people don'tbelieve them. You hunt along 322 between DuBois up to the clearfield turn off?? You know where Mitches is then and fire tower road that runs over to 7 mile run I would take it.. Have you been back there???? I seen lots of food while hunting for caches with the GPS in that area.... Have you seen the fences they have put up and the gates on the state forest lands back in the woods???Have you seen the signs that says'State timber for sale also in this area??? There is plenty of food for these deers in this area...The woods and farms around the resivoir has plenty of food for deer...Yet I have failed to see many deer in this area while looking for caches or on my drive everyday in the evening thru this area... There is an abundant of food for deer..... I live within5 miles of Mitches and hunt this area also... I know for a fact there is no shortage of food in these areas.....Even while out 4 wheeling in these areas very seldom see a deer anymore... Food isn't the problem here...... |
