Delaware just passed a hand gun law for deer only. I was surprised they passed such a law that would allow another "dangerous weapon in the woods". I proudly purchased a deadly Ruger 44 mag just for the occasion come Jan.

We need to teach and educate the narrow sect or lock em up - not legislate away legitimate rights or options for the majority of law abiding hunters.

I think we need to stick together and agree to disagree. We all love the sport or hunting but fighting will bring it down. I started this post to vent about bad hunters out there not RIFLES. It happened that they were using rifles which with this being a hot topic I thought it would just bring heat to the rifle situation that they were bad hunters. I am sure they were just as bad with shotguns. I myself use a semi rifle and shotgun infact all my guns are semi's except my muzzeloader. I am just gonna be very careful in the woods like I always am cause there are a few out there that shouldn't be there. I guess I should have titled the post different instead of mentioning rifles. Thanks everybody and lets secure the existance of our sport.

AJ52 - you are only half right. We DO need to isolate the "small sect" of the hunters - the idiots who shoot up the livestock, the guys who trespass, the poachers, the guys who don't teach their kids right. The fact is that we CAN'T. We can't "lock 'em up." If you worked in law enforcement, you'd understand. The only way is to start legislating to control who hunts, and what weaponthey use to do it. Sure it sucks that honest people lose certain privileges, but that's life man. There's a means to every end, and nothing comes for free. When you're talking about hunting, increased safety has a cost. I hope that this thread opens your eyes about that. The cost is hunters' "rights." You wanna be safe, well that's how you get there.

The fact is, the simplest solution is the best. You look at the numbers, see who the safest hunters are, and who are involved in the most accidents.You then tighten the screws on the latter by either taking them out of the woods, or taking the guns out of their hands.Whether you're running a business or a country, this is what you're trained to do, and that's precisely what I'm suggesting.

I'm sorry, I don't view a hunting law that forces us to hunt with a less dangerous weapon (limited rapid-fire capabilities, limited range) as an infringement on my rights to own a gun, and I look at them as progress, not regression.

Look at the handgun law you cited, AJ52 - a handgun is limited range, and can only be carried by 18+, if I'm not mistaken. A fairly sensible law, if you ask me. It's limiting who can hunt, and giving you a weapon with limited effective range. Not much different than a bow, really.

QS, Do you have any documentation that suports your theory that young hunters are more dangerous than any other age group? I've seen a few and all that I've seen actually shown the 12-20 age group as one of the safest segments of our ranks.

And while we're at it, can you support your theory that semi-autos make the deer woods more dangerous with some real facts?

If you want to have responsible hunters you just have to educate them. If they break the law by violating the rules then you put them in jail like anyone else.

Shooting livestock,poachers and tresspassers have nothing to do with the proper use of semi auto weapons. You start with semi auto weapons and the next thing - there gone - done - out of production.The simplest solution as you state is a cop out for liberals who feel they need to legislate everything to suit the minority.

Lets legislate against Big Mack cheeseburgers and similar fast foods that cause obesity in young kids. The list could go on and on. This obviously is not the solution or at least should be an absolute LAST RESORT in our society.Let the citizens regulate themselves whenever possible. A prime example is self imposed QDM methods.

You are right that not every hunter with a rifle is as safe as we would likefor themto be, however I think your solutionof eliminate gun hunting all together is a little much. It's actually the dumbest thing I have ever heard from a so-called hunter........

It's an honest question I am wondering. I disagree completely with your ideals, seeing little (wellnone actually)evidence to back them up or to consider them, but respect your position as such.
