That cat looks malnourished/emaciated. What did it die from?
A big cat was recently found in western Michigan too, but I can't remember if it was a mountain lion or bobcat, but the gist of the story was the same - that they are repopulating areas where cats used to be prevalent.

As far as cougars in the Lower Peninsula, for the longest time the DNR refused to acknowlege that they were down there. I've talked to several people who have seen them around Cadilac and even seen video of one that some guy saw in his back yard. Wolverines are the same way. They're there whether the DNR believes it or not.

I believe they spotted a Mountain Lion in MI near SLEEPING BEAR DUNES NATIONAL LAKESHORE...
I used to live in Southern California and the mountain lions there would pick off a few joggers and mountain bikers every year. Those cats are nothing to mess with.

I was talking to the owner down at the local archery store and I guess they think the cat ended up dieing from dehydration caused by the would. Figure he lost a bit of weight before dieing from just water loose and not eating and you could probably add 15+ pounds to his carcass weight. Young cat, judging by his mouth but maybe not... The wound was a pretty old wound. The is about 40 miles as the crow flies from where I live and it has caused a bit of interest. There are still reports of sittings and sheep kills being dragged away. This is not dog behavior. Is is true or just people playing off the story? Who knows but it makes me think sometimes.
Side not, I read in a local article that his ears had been nibled on, not by rodents mind you but something else. According to the eprson interviewed that is sometimes the result of courtship/breeding behavior.. I have no idea if the person knew what she was talking about but interesting never the less. Wolves, cats...Maybe I should just move back West.

On two occasions last summer I found approx. 4" wide cat tracks on my deer lease in Greene County(near Eldred). I say cat because it left no claw marks in the soft mud. Canids leave claw marks in their tracks.
A guy hunting there 2 weeks ago said he heard a scream one morning. He shivered as he told me of it.
Neighbors tell tales of the cat killing a pet deer and other livestock. I've not talked to anyone who claims to have seen it.
I would not be surprised, the terrain is right for cats like that. Food is plentiful.

the stores are pretty good about the cats around. Mostly along the Illinois River when you get this far North but with how much rough land is in the southern End of the state well, you just know they are there and have been for a while. We don't have as much around here, not saying one or two couldn't hide here in one of the "nature areas" but large areas of timbered cover are rare in this neck of the woods.
