Mio Michigan

Just curious does anyone hunt the Mio area. I hunted it for years until the first year of the TB tags when i would see 10-20 does hanging on peoples poles in a weekend. Sure did Love it up there though my family hunted it for close to 50 years.

I hunt southern Mi. in Hillsdale, Jackson and Shiawassee counties. I am trying to dedicate all my time this coming year to Hillsdale though. I would like to get up to Mio though for opening weekend of bow season just for old times sake. I have 2 daughters that bow hunt neither with a deer yet, figured it would be kind of cool for them to get their first from the same tree I did 22 years ago.

Haven't been up there in years. Maybe the deer heard will come back more balanced than rest the state. I doubt it though if Michigans DNR has anything to do with it. 30 to 1 like the rest of the state, with the 1 being a 1 1/2 old running for his life.

My family never did to well up there for big bucks even 30 years ago. We hunted the Huron National Forest. It seems though that our older generations were not as serious about it as the kids they have raised, me included. I have shot 2 good bucks, both in the UP. I have only seen a few small bucks on stand while hunting Mio. We'd catch the big ones in the headlights on the way to town. They were there but, not near us LOL.

I started out hunting the Mainistee national forest.I never seen a buck with a gun in my hand. The only bucks taken back then were 1 1/2 ers. This was back in the late 80's where if you wanted a deer it had to be antlered. You would sit out there and see 20 flat heads and no bucks. I still have relatives that hunt it now they only see about 1 to three doe per sit. What a waste of time.I Love the big woods feel ,but sitting there knowing there is no mature buck is to much for me.

I know that feeling all to well. I did see a cow elk once in Mio, a small black bear and a bobcat. All in the same season. But, no deer taken. I do know this, they taste better when they are corn and soy fed as opposed to pine. I'll stay south LOL.
