Default HBC 2009 Follow-Up Report

I don't have pics yet, but I have the report. I'll post pics later.

Well, it’s in the books. Following tornado warnings and over an inch of rain in some areas on Friday night, the HBC went on as planned. The sun came out about 10 and the temperature rose to the 90’s. Water clarity wasn’t the greatest, but it was good enough to shoot some fish. We had 26 teams show up and 25 teams check in, bringing in a total of 404 fish for a 16 fish/team average (not bad for the water clarity). We had all the following fish checked in: Commons, bigheads, Asian, grass carp, long nose and short nose gar, dogfish, big and small mouth buffalo, and some quillback (didn’t count), but no shad? The big fish of the tournament was a 27.12 grass carp shot by tournament veteran Andy Creighton (new HBC river record). This won him the $50 Big Grassy prize, but he didn’t get in the big fish pot, so Jon Piest of Illinois won the $75 side pot with his 25.12 pounder. The Big Common award of $75 went to another tournament vet Jon Riley for his 16.2 pounder. The Big Bighead award of $50 went to my partner Kent Zimpfer (he’s says it was his) for his 17.12 lb. fish. Our first Asian carp checked in ever was a 5.1 pounder, giving local shooter Kameron Banes $25 and title of HBC record holder. Ben Stier shot the only dogfish of the tournament that weighed in at 4.5 lbs., winning him $25. Big Buffalo was a 24.5 lb small mouth shot by Kent Zimpfer of Delphi with a great assist shot from his partner, which won him $50. This is a new HBC buffalo record edging out ex-employee and buddy Clay Shoop’s previous record of 23.3 lbs. set in 2007. The $50 Big Gar Award went to Kameron Banes for his 7.14 lb fish. The Smallest Carp Award of a Muzzy hat and Cajun Archery arrow went to John Stambaugh of Peru, IN for his 1.2 lb. fish. Average Joe prize of $50 went to father and son combo Frank and Shane Loveland of Delphi, IN with their 16 fish. First place with 73 fish won John Stambaugh and Jake Steg of Peru, IN the chance at an AMS Fire Eagle bow or $300. They chose the money. The second place award of $150 went to Andy Creighton and Josh Middleton of Idaville, IN for their 50 fish. John and Jim Ulerick of Kokomo, IN took the $100 third place prize with their 48 fish. On a side note, I met John in Caseville, MI at the GLBC this year and he only lives about 30 minutes away- strange world. Taking the fourth place prize $75 with their 41 fish was self-proclaimed Team Lamprey (because they suck) consisting of Clay Shoop and Brian Jones of Delphi, IN. Rounding out the top spots at #5 was Jim Panther and Rocky Price of Peru, IN with their 33 fish and $50 prize.
Thanks to all of our sponsors (AMS, Muzzy, Cajun Archery, Old National Bank, J&M Outdoors, The Office Tavern, Altimate Lawnscape, Houston Turkey Calls, Z Construction, and the Jefferson Township Conservation Club) for the HUGE prize table that we had. We raffled off the AMS Fire Eagle bow and it went to a young man that will use it to carry on the tradition of bowfishing. A lot of old and new faces went into making another HBC a successful one. Thanks to all that contributed to, participated, and came to watch this year. I look forward to the future of the HBC and bowfishing in the state of Indiana. August 15th is the night shoot located at River Junction near Americus, IN. It will be from 7 P.M. to 6 A.M., a put in take out, and 3-person shoot. For information email Dustin Houston at [email protected]. See you at the night shoot or at the 2010 HBC for some Blood, Guts, and Carp Eggs!
