Lake Michigan Carp
#1
I recently got together with a man namedKenfrom northern Indiana to explore the bowfishing opportunites along the big lake on the Hoosier side of the state line. Our photographer Teresa joined us to take a couple of pictures.
Let me tell you, there are some big fish out there, and Ken says 20-30 pounders are not uncommon. We had a north wind blowing the waves into shore, so the fish stayed out deep, but we could see tail fins the size of basketballs.

The terrain was rough in this one spot near a warm water discharge, but it's worth the climb. Ken says that on a warm day with the right wind the big 'ole submarine sized carp are right up near the rocks and you can shoot them until you get bored.

A few fish teased us by coming close enough for a shot, but the swells and crashing waves made for very tough shooting. I think I drew on this one 3 times and never had a good enough view to let it fly.

Thanks to Ken, his wife Dawn, and their two lovely daughters for having us over and driving us around a good sized chunk of northwestern Indiana showing us fishing spots, boat launches, and shortcuts.
The fishing can be done by land or boat. Ken is a regular at these spots and uses both approaches. His wife joins him on the fishing trips and hunts deer with him during the fall and winter. I look forward to getting together with them again on a better day and having a fun shoot with any of our members who might wish to 'cross the line'.
Indiana fishing licenses can be bought easily on-line, and I have the info to tell you where you to go, or get you in touch with Ken for a guided tour.
