I' m in the market for a new scope. The scope will go on a Remington 700 in .257 Roberts. I will use the rifle for deer hunting. I have been looking at the Bushnell 4200 2.5X10X40. Comparing this scope to my Leupold 4X12X40 Vari-X II, it is much brighter and clearer. The only thing I don' t like is it doesn' t have as much eye relief. If anyone has a suggestion for another brand of scope please give it too me. I am going to spend $400 or less and this doesn' t include the price of bases and rings.

I know several people with bushnell elites on magnum rifles and none have had problems with a lack of eye relief.Since you are going to mount the scope on a 257 I would not be worried.

I have on my ML and used to have one on a 300 wby mag, never had a problem in function or eye relief. Very nice scope.
Others you could consider in that range are:
Zeiss conquest (3.5" eye relief) 400
Burris Signature Series (3.5-4" ) 400
Loopy Vari X III (3.6 - 4.6" ) 470
I own a loopy varix III & Burris Sign Series, both are very clear, hold POI and function flawlessly. I have looked through a Zeiss it is a nice scope, some say it is brighter and clearer than the others I mentioned but in all honesty I never noticed much of a difference...still a very nice scope indeed!
Any 4 scopes would work nicely and I am sure you' d be pleased. All come with a lifetime warranty to boot. Best advice if possible take a look through them all and decide for yourself which is the best!
Good Luck!

Actually the 3x9 ziess conquest is listed as 4" of eye relief which is more at high power than the vari x iii.It is also constant through all powers..

Another one the I would take a look at is the Nikon Monarch Series. The 4-12x40 has an eye relief of 3.6-3.4. These scopes are very bright and clear and run $340' s.

I am sorry SJ is correct I was thinking of the 44mm objective model I was looking at, the 40mm is 4" of eye relief. I would seriously look at this scope and it is in the same price range on several sites (Cabelas being just one). To be honest if I could get this scope for the same price as a 4200, their would be no debate...Zeiss!

Thanks for all of the advice. I just purchased the Bushnell 4200 at a local gun show. I gave $294.00 plus tax. I think this is a good price. I also bought some Burris signature rings to use in mounting the scope. I will post my results after I mount and sight in. My rifle is very accurate and I will see how the scope tracks when making adjustments.

I bought a 50 buck BSA Mild Dot Scop 6.5-24X40. Held up for 3 season on my 7mm. Love it, wouldn' t sell it if I did I would get me another jsut like it. Whats with spending a rediculous amount of money on a scope that cost almost as much as your gun? I will never understand some ppl.

I had a BSA on my .22-250 and it made it 2 season of just shooting at my targets and its junk now......
I looked at a leupold riflemany 3-9X40 and its a good looking scope, crystal clear when you look through it....... Its 200 bucks at walmart... I am going to pick one up tonight i think.

granddaddy never used a scope on his rifles. I guess that rubs off on me a bit. But I wouldn' t spend 200 bucks on a scope, 200 bucks for ammo or a stand or something else. I guess I got one of the " lucky" BSAs, I take care of my stuff too so that helps too. I think a scope is as good as what you make out of it. I have never had a sec trouble out of it and it has never let me down. I walked/fell down the side of a steep muddy as heck hill got my gun and me all muddy, that same night I dropped a buck at 275 yards 5 min before sun down. That was a test enough for me for my gun and the BSA. You all have your oppinions.........but you' ll never catch me buying a high dollar scope.
