LMAO, I think his point was (kinda sorta in a roundabout way) that you can sometimes get a good rifle a little cheaper with those combo deals. I remember a while back Dick's had a combo Savage deal with a pretty worthless Simmons or Bushnell (can't remember which POS glass it was) on it but the combo deal was still less than the bare rifle a few months earlier. Picked it up for my Grandson, threw a decent Nikon Prostaff on it and had a nice little deer rifle for the kid.

OK Topgun I'll put it in real plain English, $386 for a Savage 110 Combo, gun is great a legit 1/2 MOA shooter, don't trust the scope on a deer hunt so I replaced it with something better built and now I love the rifle all the more, sure I could have just bought them seperatly to begin with but that would have cost me more since the rifle alone cost more then the combo, and if it is worth anything to you those Bushnell sportsman scopes are not a bad little piece of glass for a 22, sure beats those cheap tasco and centerpoint scopes at Walmart and it is essentially free so why not. That is the point I was trying to make. So don't always avoid combos, just figure in replacing the scope/rings/base when counting up the money since they will likely fail you at some point.

I misinterpreted the post also - when you say "don't knock package guns, I love mine, although I took off the package part," then I read it exactly how Topgun did.
There's no difference in the package guns and their base model rifles, they just come with cheap stocks and scopes.
The point of Sheridan and I's posts was that the scopes aren't worth owning on the rifle they come on, so why buy it? Kachok's post supported that.
The sarcasm might have been implied, but it was thinly so, as it wasn't readily available at the surface.
But the point remains - the package deals really don't come with scopes that earn their position on the rifle.

Magnums kick quite a bit about as much as a 12ga running slugs maybe more depending on how heavy the rifle is. I'd recommend a 270 or a 308 win because of its flat shooting capabilities and I'd in the 6.5s if it was easier to get ammo for them.
