Link on the same topic not to long ago here: http://www.huntingnet.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=1665948
Midland 550's so far have been the best for us in retail consumer radios, we have tried cobra, motorola and some jobbers. In dense terrain expect the radios reach to be hampered a lot, they are all based on line of site.

Hey crawfish, I asked the same not too long ago here. I gotalot of negatives for the Motorola's and decided to go with the Midland GXT650. I then had a buddy take one home ( 2miles away the crow flies ) and during the "Ernesto" storm was able to talk clear to him, then from inside our houses with noticeable static, still talk. He now wants one after he chucks his moto's.Also, there is a $15 rebateon them right now.You won't go wrong with these, there awesome.
