RE: zeiss or leupold ????

the leupold has greater eye relief. the LEUPOLD is MADE IN AMERICA . if i have a problem i know how to take care of it because leupolds service and warranty is legendary even allowing transfer of warranty to the next buyer. where does the zeiss go for repair? unless there are trained techs and repair facilities here in the states .
The leupolds have less eye relief at the higher powers. The conquest is also made in America. The conquest has a lifetime transferable warranty, and they have a repair center in the U.S.A.

I have a leupold on my Finnlite but plan on replacing it with the Conquest 3x9x40. Not really into 50mm objectives, I find they are getting heavy enough at 40 mm.

Leupold VX-III 3.5-10x 40 mm is plenty. In my experience this scope provides good visibility AFTER my unaided eye is no longer able to distinguish targets because of descending darknessand AFTER legal shooting light has passed. What purpose would be served by providing even more dim light capability in this context? Is hunting at midnight legal anywhere in the United States? The Leupold is very robust and field worthy. The image rendered by this scope is very crisp and clear. Sure, I can believe other higher dollar scopes provide a brighter image and a crisper image, but I don't buy that this means they provide any advantage for hunting, as described above. You can pay more, but do you get any hunting advantage under any circumstances? Just my $0.02. I have three Leupold VariX-III 3.5-10x 40 mm and one Leupold VX-III 3.5-10x 40 mm scopes mounted on .25-06, .243, .30-06 (sporterized military Springfield), and .30-06 (Remington ADL with synthetic stock -- my backup/foul weather rifle -- can use this in the rain when I don't want to risk damaging or spoiling the finish on my wood stocked rifles).

Yes, the Leupold VX-III 3.5-10x40 is plenty scope. I know, I've owned one. However, for about $20 LESSI prefer theZeiss Conquest 3-9x40 which to my eyes has slightly better optics, a better reticle and a constant 4" of eye relief. And in my experience the Zeiss is just as rugged.

great info! to me eye relief and having some give is a big deal. my buddy watched a nice buck walk right by him this past season because he couldnt get the scope on the deer quick enough. with his heart pumping and the way he had to position himself in the stand all he saw was shadow. i get the feeling it was the eye relief and nerves. also i think some may get caught up in the fact that they can own a big pricey name brand optic associated with the big dollar ones at a low price. for instance my musician and recording studio buddies bought 900$ german made microphones and bought it because it was a new line of a big company that typically sold microphones for well over 2 grand. guess what my 400$ japanese mic blows theres away. i know its off subject a bit but just my way of thinking.

I have both and they are great scopes. My Zeiss is an older3-9 variable and the Lupy is only a couple of years old. The new Leupold is probably just as good as my older Zeiss. A good side by side comparison is the only true way to decide. Years ago when I bought my Zeiss I held it up to about 6 other scopes and even though it was more money it was worth it. I have Zeiss binoculars too and a couple of years ago on a trip to rainy Newfoundland they leaked and fogged up. When I returned I went on line and sent them back. I got a brand new pair of Zeiss because the 6 year old binoculars failed. Give some thought to the 50 bell. Too big for me especially on a gun that is fitted to be light weight.

I got a Zeiss 3x9-40 Conquest on my wby 257mag Ultra-lite...and it's the clearest scope I've ever looked through..but it's like most of the rest in it's class...too heavy. That 257mag..supposenly "Ultra-Lite" is not so light and I should have put a compact Leupold on it to helpout. I would but haven't used thatgun in the last two seasons.
