The 300 savage is close to the same power as the 308 winchester. The winchester has a slightly longer neck which allows it to hold more powder. brasskeeper, I believe the Pre-1955 Savage has a shorter action than the Post-1955 action.
They made it alittle longer when Winchester intoduced the .308 in 1955.
I agree with you, the .300 can be hanloaded to match the .308Win
