Default Shotgun Scope

Okay new to the shotgun world and would like to know what type of scope I should get for my Mossberg 500 12GA. I will mostly be using it for deer season here in ohio, as well as some varmint hunting. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I live in Ohio as well (South West). I do most of my whitetail hunting in Vinton county area though. I personally dont use a scope on my shotgun; however, my father uses a Red Dot scope. He seems to enjoy and works well for him. Perhaps you should take a look at those.

With a rifled barrel, I suggest the Leupold 2-7X33 shotgun scope. I love mine and quickly became one of my favorite guns.

Ditto Bigcountry... two choices there though. The two models to chose from are Leupold 1-4x20 and 2-7X33. If you tend to be more of a "snap" shooter, go with the 1-4. If you tend to take your time when you shoot, the 2-7 would be more appropriate. I currently own both of these scopes. I just switched to the 2-7 from the 1-4 on my shotgun, as I don't usually shoot at running game. I am trying to increase my shooting skills at longer ranges with this gun and find the 2-7 better suited.

Haganwood,

I have a real nice setup with my 12 ga. Fully rifled barrel with a cantelever mounted leupold 3-9. That is a little high on the magnification but will do great for your varmit hunting. I also spend the money on the ammo. I shoot the Winchester supreme partition golds. I can hit a small goose house at 217 yds consistently.

STAY AWAY FROM THE RED DOT. Too many factors. Those sunny snow covered days you won't be able to see the dot. Plus the red dot won't do to well for varmit hunting.

Good Luck
