Well, I don't like the Failsafes or TBBC. They build pressure quick, you can't seem to get the velocity you want due to that. And accuracy of most solid shanks bullets are usually so-so.

I have used the a-frames on moose, but man, they are so expensive. But they worked nicely. For your situation, pick the A-frames and 160gr at that. I have seen however a partition penetrate thru a moose at 150 yards where a A-Frame did not. May not mean much, but the A-Frame doesnt' loose its front like a Partition. I won't hesitate to use a partition, A-Frame, TSX, or the newer Accubond on any of those game you mentioned.

Also I like the barnes TSX. I can get nice velocity out of them. Good accuracy and penetrates like a failsafe.

99 percent of the time the Barnes bullet will get more velocity than any other bullet given the same amount of powder. I think it is that Barnes bullets of equal weight are longer than other bullets Thus more bearing surface area. If you can clean out the copper ok then I would go with the X bullet. You can get the penetration you want with a lighter bullet thus more velocity. The 140 X bullet would do all the game you mentioned. I am going to try the coated X bullets next. There should be less copper fouling. You can't beat the partition either. I have not used the fail safe or the A Frames very much.

I know it sounds pretty boring, but the old fashioned Partition is probably the best all around bullet available. It gives you massive and fast expantion up to the partition, but then the shank stays intact and keeps driving the bullet forward- the best of both worlds.

I have seen the results of both used on moose and elk several times ,have you?

In a side by side comparision 30-06 bullets of Failsafe and Nosler shot into wet newspaper.

Nosler- (average) penetration 16.4 in., w/ 64% (average) weight retention.

Failsafe- penetration 27.6 in., w/84% weight retention.

I got stuck last season without having any Barnes TSX (my favorite) reloaded due to a last minute damaged die. So I bought a box of 30-06 180 gr Failsafe bullets to use on an elk hunting trip. I downed a cow that the guy I was hunting with measured with a range finder at 300 yds. It hit a little low and front for my taste. It went thru the front shoulder and exited the far shoulder that it completly smashed. So I'll still stick with the Barnes but, would not hesitate to use Failsafe either.

Thanks for the info. The Nosler Partition is actually the bullet I wanted to use, but my rifle absolutely hates them. I had considered the Failsafes and TBBC, but as bigcountry indicated, they may have accuracy issues. The round that I found to be the most accuracte was the Speer Nitex Grand Slam (1 MOA at 100 yds), but they discontinued making them this year. Looks like I will have to give the A-Frames a try next.
