bigcountry, you stated that you would also recrown. Why? Like I said, with a quality stock, scope, receiver and trigger already in my possession, I am hoping to get away with this for as little as possible, so going out and spending 200 - 300 dollars on a barrel is kind of defeating the purpose.
Sqrln8r, I find crowning to be one of the easiest and cheapest insureances there are. While the barrel is off. Why not? At least check it for square and borescope the new one.

Wouldn't the bolt face have to be enlarged as well?
I would say at least checked. 8mmRemmag is very very close to the 300RUM so is the 7mmSTW.

Our hats and jackets don't match but we do shoot together on occaision.

As for the ultramag conversion, three rounds will not fit the non ultramag magazine. The ultramag case will not feed properly without modifying the rails.Be advised that if you remove too much material it will not feed properly either.I suggest that you have a gunsmith that has done this before, do the feed rail work.I believe that you also require the ultramag follower. The bolt face will be fineas is.I am aware of these things because one of my ultramags was built on a standard magnum action.
