I would never use anything lighter than 180 grain in the 300 Win Mag. The lighter bullets can be explosive at high velocity. I am starting to rethink the 150 grain bullets in the 06. I used them this year. Speer grandslams at 2900+ fps. The meat damage was more than I like to see. I think the next time out I will try the 180 grains in the 06 as well. As far as killing a deer the 150 grains do that well. I have never used the 180 grains in the 06 for deer but have for bears and moose as well as elk.

I'd use a premium bullet for game, they deserve a humane and quick kill. X-bullets,partitions, ect... I'd use 180s for the win mag and 150 for 30-06. I chose those weight bullets because in those calibers they are the middle road of speed vs. weight of bullet.
You are free to use whatever ammo you think best. However, to imply that a premium bullet is more humane and quick to kill an animal like a Whitetail deer is just false. The only situation where your statement might be true is if the premium ammo were functionally (I said functionally - not minutely) more accurate. They are no more humane or quick to kill than a standard grade, proper slug, properly aimed. Now if you're talking different circumstances, like especially long range or other, tougher game animals like moose or bear, I would agree with your statement. But not with normal white tail hunting.

zeke - hunting whitetail usually means a very cautious animal ready to go 0-supersonic in .25 seconds. on the bench you can get that perfect shot, but it never happens on a hunt, if everyone always got the perfect shot, put it on the money every time, then we'd just use a 22lr and never trail or track a wounded animal because it would die on impact w/o taking a single step. In hunting situation I CAN say that a premium bullet will do a more humane job 90 out of 100 hits in REAL HUNTING situations, not story book perfect shots like at the range.

The problem I'm contemplating, a bullet that will expand quick enough to do enough damage for the occasional real-world gut shot on a small doe, but will hold together for the occasional real-world shoulder shot at a less than perfict angle on a large body buck.

Last week dad had a 150gr. Remington RN bullet in a .270 explode when he hit the shoulder of a very large doe at an angle, only a small piece of the bullet traveled through the ribs and to the lungs. The shot was only about 50 yards, the deer ran about 50 yards, without a spot of blood. That got me thinking a bit. The same shot on a very large buck might have resulted in a lost animal?

What kind of bullets fit the bill here?

Mike

SM
If you go with a premium bullet like the Barnes (my fravorite), Fail Safe, or Swift A-Frame that will not happen to you again. All of these will hold together if they hit large bone at close ranges.

Thoughts on Nosler Partitions? I've heard good things about them holding their integrity, but what about expansion if no bones are hit?

Federal offers the Partition in 130 & 150 grain for the .270.

30.06 I personally use a speer 165 gr SBT with 50 grains of IMR4895 Shoots great and alot of knockdown! old military load from what I've been told.

SM if your worried about bone contact or have mostly close range shots the NP will work just fine. Personally for deer I'd try the 130's first off but whichever shoots the best should get the nod! As far as expansion they may not open up as much as a NBT or similar but they do a nice job in most cases where bone isn't contact. IMO they aren't required for even large framed deer but then again I don't aim for the flush shoulder and don't really worry about the "what if's" when it comes to whitetails or mulie's. Not a knock just my own beliefs.

Greenjeans, I have experience with the corelokt and do not like. I would never use it but that is my own opinion. It is the most popular not because of quality but price and availablity...that don't make it the best or only choice though!
