Although I will never give up my .270 and .30-06 for deer i have recently got into the whole magnum Hype. I purchased a .300 win mag for elk and moose and love its stoping power and flat trajectory. I am also considering purchasing an ultra mag but unsure of the differance between regular MAGS and ULTRA MAGS????

My Nosler reloading manual shows the 300 Win Mag with the 180 grain bullet at 3160 fps. It shows the Ultra-mag with the saome bullet at 3229. thats just not worth the extra powder and cost of brass and or ammo. A beast would never know the difference. The Sierra manual shows just 100 fps more velocity with the 200 grain bullet for the 300 Ultra. This 100 fps second comes at the cost of 15-25 grains more powder. The difference just isn't there.

If you already have a 300win mag I completely agree w/ jamesB. The 300RUM doesnt give you anything extra. If you want an Ultra mag and already have the 300win mag get the 338 RUM.

I have yet to see anyone get that Nosler Velocity including myself, but agree if you got a 300 long action 180gr shootin, greater than 3000fps rifle, then I wouldn't buy the 300RUM unless I just want it. I have had 300Wins, weatherby's and now have a RUM. All do the job well. I am very interested in the 300WSM's these days.

If you want more than the winmag, consider the 338win mag.

Hodgdon gets 3121 with the 180 grain and Sierra lists an even 3100.. I never loaded the 300 Winchester with the 180 grain past about 2900. Thats plenty fast for me.

FINALLY!!!! thanks you-oldelkhunter,bigcountry,jamesb. someone else who saw the things I suspected about the RUM. nice advertising they did w/ the 300RUM. I dont have a 300RUM, but I do have a 300win mag and know what my loads cronny at. I noticed early on in the magazine articles compareing the 300's that they were compareing factory loads in the win mag and weatherby mag to top hand loads in the RUM, then useing those numbers to claim that the RUM was on par w/ the 30-378. I've always felt the RUM was more on par w/ the 300weatherby. Now I've got some guys who can give some credence to my thoughts. I still think the RUM is a very good cartridge, just not all they claim.

NVMike, was trying to explain, I have yet to ever get over 3127fps with a 180bullet from a win mag. I do get 3350fps from a RUM with Retumbo, and 180 speer. I have yet to see over 3200fps with a 300Weatherby with a 180gr bullet. The claims are right, the nosler velocity for the win mag is what i question.

Out of the factory 300 magnums the 300 RUM is the best for the price.I to have handloaded for the 300 win and have not got over the 3100 fps mark with out loosing accracy,it dose better at 300 to 2950's.

As for the 300 Weatherby I have pushed 3200 fps and done well with 180 gr Speer Boatails.

Now I have got the 300 RUM up to 3200 (3180)fps with 200 gr slug and over 3400 with the 165 gr Nosler Boatails.
So on those figures I shoot the 300 RUM and the speed is what I like.
Now if you don't reload,the factory 180gr cartrige from federal is a great round for the 300 RUM

Big Country,I have yet to get over 3000 fps from my 300 WSM with 180 gr bullets.Now I have gotten to 3150 fps with 165 gr Boatails and have seen one elk taken with that load and it preformed great.

Throughout all of my manuals there is an average of about 100-150 fps between the RUM and the 300 Win Mag. I admit that I am a fan of the 300 Win Mag and for me there is no reason for the extra powder and cost of components of the RUM. I loaded my 300 Win Mag to about 2900 fps unless I needed the extra velocity(which I never did.) I have seen the results of any good 180 grain bullet @ 2900-3000 fps on all sizes of big game. I see no need to put more stress on the bullets when they perform so well at moderate speeds. Everything I killed with my 300 Win Mag, could have and has been killed by the 30-06 at velocities quite a bit less than those produced by the 300 Win Mag. I quess some folks feel the need to eek out the max velocity from every cartridge. For those the 300 Ultr super max mags are there to please. I don't need it and the 300 Win Mag is more than need I at its humble velocity. Good Hunting.
