The .375 H&H has to be the #1 favorite for guys going to the Dark Continent. I'm aware that it's really not the prefered choice for folks who live there, but most new gun sales in the dangerous game catagory are probably in this choice. It performs well, without excessive recoil, can comfortably handle anything that has ever walked, crawled, swam or flew. And the long, sloping case is hot to look at. What do you think of this beauty?

This one is about the biggest cartridge that anyone in North America would have use for. Some like even bigger rounds but the 375 H&H will handle anything in North America with ease. It fairly flat shooting and the recoil while not mild is handled pretty well my most shooters. Its down side as a world wide cartridge is that its not always legal in some countries with a ban on sub 40 caliber guns. I have no need of one but would like to add one to my barrery of firearms. I may pick up a barrel for the Encore as they make that in thier heavy barrel with a Muzzle break which would help off the bench. I have fired a 100 or so rounds off the bench with this caliber while chronographing loads for a friend who hunts Africa every other year. In the off years they hunt British Columbia. He and his wife both hunt. They have a Dakota 416 Rem Mag. A winchester Safari Model in 375 H&H and use a 270 for the plains game. If my health holds up I may go with them next year.

I don't know if sloping cases are "hot" to me, but I appreciate the classic appearance and why they built them that way. So they would feed well for dangerous game & other dicey situations. Cartridges that also come to mind are the 7 & 8mm mauser, with tapered cases. Handloaders reap the benefits.
After careful consideration, I won't pick up a 375 due to the condition of my shoulder. Lost a half inch of bone or so there due to the fun and frolics of the gulf war. So I am sticking with the 45 70 for the authoritative role. But having fired the 375 years past, I would recommend it to anyone who is not recoil limited.
