3rd Caliber opinion: .308 Win.
Though not one of my personal favorites, I'll admit this cartridge is extremely popular, and for good reason. Accuracy tends to be fantastic, with mild recoil. Lot's of power to spare, and the short action rifles it is available in are nice to carry. What is your opinion on this old girl?

Pharaoh2 the .308 Winchester has always been one of my favorite calibers! With its short action, and reputation for great accuracy, the .308 is as good as any deer caliber that you could name. Within reasonable ranges, with the right bullets, it can handle much larger game too! The .308 compares very well with the 30-06, until you get into the larger bullets, but then when you get to the heavier bullets, you might want to go up to the .300 anyway!
As I said, one of my all time favorites! Its been around a good while, and it will be here when some of the newbies are forgotten!
There are many good choices in rifle calibers, the .308 is certainly one of them!

The .308Win has gotten even better with the advent of more and more premium bullets. With today's selection of premium bullets, the .308Win with 150gr bullets can do everything that used to be expected from a 30-06 with 180gr bullets. Times change and cartridges are better then ever and more adaptable to situations. In effect, the .308Win has become an excellent ek cartridge, capable of doing all tasks, for which we used to choose the 30-06.

Whats not to like about this cartridge. Short action, accurate and versitile. With good bullets and good shot placement it will do for nearly all North American hunting. It is very popular with the steel silhouette shooters because of its long range ability and light recoil. I have one in the Browning light weight composite Salker. It lags a bit behind the 30-06 with the heavy 30 caliber bullets but the difference is small.

If you handload the .308 win you can get 2700 fps with a 180 gr. bullet. That is the equal to just about all factory 3006 180 gr. loads. I laugh when I read posts where they consider the .308 win a short range round but not the 3006. The .308 is a great round that will take game up to moose with no problem at all. And the bonus is thet the rifles are lighter and handier.

In thick cover its hard to beat. tons of factory ammo, more bullet weights than any other caliber out there, hits very hard under 200yds. only draw back is it doesnt handle big bullets that well at long ranges.
