i have a ruger 10/22 carbine, chambered for .22 lr (obviously)i bought a pack of new ammo recently, cci .22 lr "Blazer". after testing it out, i sound it was about 75% louder than my previous ammo "cci standard velocity" I have a great deal of land, but i dont want to disturb the neighbors when im keeping the squirells out of my garden. what is the quietest .22 lr ammo you have shot?

Hi Cheez:
Unfortunately, you aren't going to get any of the subsonic ammo to cycle the action in your 10/22. If you have a bolt, or access to one, you can get the cb ammo, that is about as loud as an air rifle and does a number on squirrels.
Good Luck.

I had to chuckle a little bit because I understand the frustration of squirrels and rabbits in the garden. I have never owned a Ruger 10/22 but I have had other semiauto 22's that I fed subvelocity 22 ammo for, single shot, for just the same reason. Sometimes they would eject after firing, sometimes I would have to manually pull the bolt back. Perhaps I have had some damn noisy air rifles as a kid, but a 22 CB round in a 22 rifle seemed to make less noise to me than an air rifle.

ive been told that cb rounds dont have the punch required to kill an animal humanly, i wanna know about the quietest .22 round that can actualy cycle through my gun 9eject and feed correctly) i dont like manually loading shells. theres nothing that feels worse than trying to load another bullet when theres an animal over there flailing and kicking in pain because u cant follow up on another shot imedeatly

Sure. Well, I always thought squirrels were the toughest because they are kind of hyper, moving varmints when it comes to a headshot. You could try 22 shorts to see if they will cycle, but I am guessing they won't unless your clip and recoil spring are forgiving. Otherwise, it is back to standard 22LR loads.
Don't want to get you in trouble with city ordinances, tho. You can get Havahart traps for a whole lot less than a lawyer. :-)

I use match 22 LR ammo, has about the quietest report without to much velocity loss so the action in the 10-22 still fuctions correctly. My favorite and one of the cheaper of match 22 ammo is Wolf match extra has a muzzle velocity of 1050 fps thats with a 40 grain bullet, plenty of punch for squirrel. the report is a mild crack shouldnt bother your neighbors at all.

Winchester T22 target ammo is reasonably priced, is standard velocity ammo, is very consistant, and doesn't bark very loud compared to high velocity stuff, and its easier on your rifle.
You could buy CCI CB subsonic ammo, you would have to hand feed every round into your 10/22 but it will be apprximately as loud as clapping your hands when fired.

with your post in mind I was going through my ammo and looked at all the different types of 22 ammo Ive collected through the years. I came across some I forgot all about called Aguila SSS has a 60 grain bullet and a muzzle velocity of 900 fps. Ballistically they have the same Muzzle energy as a 32 acp they work great for squirrels just the trajectory compared to a high velcoity 22 lr is like comparing a 44 special to a 30-30 win. But the report is as quiet as CCI CB long and they will cycle a 10-22's action and feed through the magazine without any trouble.
