Default Rifle for the Wife

I am looking at buying my wife a Ruger 10/22 for plinking cans with. I don't know much about the Ruger 10/22 but I have heard good things. Do any of you guys have any pros, and or cons about this gun?

We had one about 20 years ago. It was a great shooter. I know I would get one over a marlin semi.

Great (the best in my opinion) semi auto 22lr. My only question is whether you want a semi-auto for her or not. It can lead to some bad habbits and is a little more dangerous if she's not well versed in firearms.

Make sure it fits her before buying it, I have one and my wife cant hold it proper. Otherwise they are absolutely GREAT auto loaders. There are more accessories for the ruger 10/22 than all others combined. I realy like the Marlins ive shot. My moms husband has a Marlin model 50 (he says its a 50 anyway) that is one of the most accurate guns ive ever shot. If you miss with that gun its your own fault. Sadly I cant talk him out of it. This particular Marlin will out shoot any of the stock 10-22's ive been around, and thats quite a few.

For the money the best 22 semi-auto on the market and the easiest to find aftermarket parts for.

Almost any caliber will kill your wife. Let me ask you a few questions to boil the list down.

1. What range do you think you'd take the shot? Will you only shoot across the kitchen or can you hit from really long range like from the bedroom all the way to the living room?
2. Are there any crossings that she might be funneled through? In the mornings you may have a quick open shower stall shot but I've always had better luck at the vanity they hang out there much longer. That spot between the couch and the coffee table would be great for an evening stand. It's a real pinch point.
3. Have you done any scouting? I'd set up between the food and the bedding area as usual. But some guys are finding more sign near the telephone.
4. Have you got a good set of optics? In this case ground shrinkage is a good thing.
5. Do you plan on baiting? Every year I hear guys using fried chicken or nacho cheese Doritos but more and more guys have luck with Reese's candy over any other brand.
6. Decoys are clumsy but effective. I have an old poster of Pierce Brosnan as 007 you can borrow. It's been attacked frequently but has held together.
7. Calls have mixed results. I'd try playing any song on the Hi-Fi by Bon Jovi in the northern latitudes while Brooks and Dunn works better in the south.
8. Rut dates are especially difficult to pin down. Generally any time within a week of your anniversary can be productive.
9. Scents are great. Code Blue has a new scent called "eau de Mercedes" that draws women like flies.
10. Don't worry about wind currents unless you created your own after a Mexican dinner if you know what I mean. But if you must fart (and you're good at snap shooting) like the commercial says "forget the wind just hunt".
11. Before you bring her down I'd have the price hammered out with your taxidermist first about this? Sometimes they have a special 2 for 1 for buddy deals. Some guys like the knealing pose but that's extra. At least it doubles as a place to put the TV remote but to each their own.

Sooner, you just made my day with that reply. I have been worried about my mom and dad in Mobile, AL all night just got off the phone with them and they are fine. Your reply was the humor that has been missing for the last couple of days. thank you.

I have there great, I have a 4x scope on it, i wish i had more because this gun is extremly accurate. Ive killed tones of gophers with it. the only james are from when the shell dosnt complete eject. but this only happens 1 outta 50 or more shots. and is easy to get it out. great little gun. Ive left mine stock because of a lack of funds.

Its a great gun one of the best autoloaders out there. My fiance likes to shoot mine. I would take her to check out and handle several .22's first to see which one fits her best. Try bolts, semi's and and levers. The bolt guns would be a good choice if you want to teach her the fundamentals of shooting and hunting. Whatever gun fits her best and she is comfortable with will make a good choice.
